Anders Jahre Award For Medical Research
Anders August Jahre (28 May 1891 – 26 February 1982) was a Norwegian shipping magnate and philanthropist. After his death, it was discovered that he had undertaken tax evasion on a large scale; however, his legacy continues in the form of two foundations, humanitarian and medical, that each award annual cash prizes. Early life and education Anders August Jahre was born in Sandar, Norway, Sandar on 28 May 1891, the son of farmer Jørgen Hansen Jahre and Anne Susanne Gulliksen Bøe. He was educated in law, and worked as a lawyer in Sandefjord from 1916 until 1928. Shipping career Jahre became involved in the whaling, whaling industry, and he founded the whaling company A/S Kosmos in 1928, operating out of Sandefjord. He also established Jahres Kjemiske Fabrikker, a processor of whale blubber, as well as establishing a passenger ferry line between Oslo and Kiel. Sandar, Norway
Sandar (or historically Sandeherred) is a former municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 1968. The area is now part of Sandefjord Municipality. The administrative centre was located at Sandar, right by the Sandar Church in what is now the town of Sandefjord. Sandar was located in the southern, coastal part of Vestfold county. The European route E18 highway and the Vestfoldbanen railway line both passed through the municipality. The municipality encircled the whole town of Sandefjord until 1968 when they were merged. Nils Aas
Nils Sigurd Aas (21 April 1933 – 10 February 2004) was a Norwegian sculptor. He was one of the most prominent artists in modern Norwegian sculpture and is particularly well known for his statue of Haakon VII, located in the June Seventh Square in Oslo, and for designing coins for Norwegian currency, including 10- krone and 20-krone coins. Biography Nils Sigurd Aas was born in Inderøy Municipality, in Nord-Trøndelag county, Norway. He grew up in a family of prominent carpenters and furniture makers. His grandfather (also named Nils Aas) had established a carpentry workshop and water-driven sawmill in Straumen. Asbjørn Aarnes
Asbjørn Aarnes (20 December 1923 – 8 January 2013) was a Norwegian professor and literary historian. Biography He was born at Vågbø in Tingvoll Municipality, Norway. He studied from 1951-52 at École Normale Supérieure in Paris. In 1957, Aarnes became Dr. Philos. at the University of Oslo. He was appointed professor at the University of Oslo from 1964. He was professor of European literary history from 1964 to 1993, as well as head of literature department from 1966 to 1970. He was co-editor of the book series ''Idé og tanke'', jointly with Egil A. Wyller, and principal editor of the book series ''Thorleif Dahls Kulturbibliotek'' from 1978 to 2001. He has also written several works on French literature and on Norwegian poets. Vestfold
Vestfold () is a county and a current electoral district in Norway. Located on the western shore of the Oslofjord, it borders Buskerud and Telemark counties.
