''An Australian by Marriage'' is a 1923 Australian dramatized documentary directed by Raymond Longford. It was commissioned by the Australian government for the British Empire Exhibition in Wembley Park, London, in 1924, to serve as propaganda for attracting migrants to Australia. Plot Isabelle (Lottie Lyell) emigrates from England to Australia after getting engaged to an Australian carpenter. Isabelle is met by the YWCA, Y.W.C.A. on arrival and secures a position as a nursemaid. She and herfiancébuild a home. They obtain a baby bonus. Raymond Longford
Raymond Longford (born John Walter Hollis Longford, 23 September 18782 April 1959) was a prolific Australian film director, writer, producer and actor during the silent era. Longford was a major director of the Australian films: 1896–1919, silent film era of the Australian cinema. He formed a production team with Lottie Lyell. His contributions to Australian cinema with his ongoing collaborations with Lyell, including ''The Sentimental Bloke'' (1919) and ''The Blue Mountains Mystery'' (1921), prompted the Australian Film Institute's Longford Lyell Award, AFI Raymond Longford Award, inaugurated in 1968, to be named in his honour. ''Smith's Weekly'' was an Australian tabloid newspaper published from 1919 to 1950. It was an independent weekly published in Sydney, but read all over Australia. History The publication took its name from its founder and chief financer Sir James Joynton Smith, a prominent Sydney figure during World War One, conducting fund-raising and recruitment drives.
