Amistad, New Mexico
Amistad is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Union County, New Mexico, Union County, New Mexico, United States. It is located approximately 39 miles south of Clayton, New Mexico, Clayton on New Mexico State Road 402, State Route 402. History Amistad was a stop for Cattle drives in the United States, cattle drives during the late 19th century. In 1906, Henry S. Wannamaker, a Congregational church, Congregational minister, promoted Homestead Act, homesteading by placing ads in church newspapers. This led to more than 40 older ministers staking claims in Amistad. They formed "The Improvement Association" and named the community Amistad, after the Spanish word for friendship. A post office was established in 1907. At one time there were two newspapers in Amistad. The population declined in later years, but Amistad is still inhabited. Amistad National Recreation Area is a national recreation area managed by National Park Service (NPS) that includes the area around the Amistad Reservoir at the confluence of the Rio Grande, the Devils River, and the Pecos River near Del Rio in Val Verde County, Texas. The reservoir was created by the Amistad Dam (''Presa de la Amistad'' in Spanish), completed in 1969, located on the Rio Grande at the United States-Mexico border across from the city of Ciudad Acuña in the Mexican state of Coahuila. Amistad Reservoir () is a Reservoir (water), reservoir on the Rio Grande at its confluence with the Devils River (Texas), Devils River northwest of Del Rio, Texas, Del Rio, Texas. The lake is bounded by Val Verde County, Texas, Val Verde County on the United States side of the international border and by the state of Coahuila on the Mexico, Mexican side of the border; the American shoreline forms the Amistad National Recreation Area. The reservoir was formed in 1969 by the construction of Amistad Dam. The dam and lake are managed jointly by the governments of the United States and Mexico through the International Boundary and Water Commission. ''La Amistad'' (; Spanish for ''The Friendship'') was a 19th-century two-masted schooner owned by a Spaniard living in Cuba. It became renowned in July 1839 for a slave revolt by Mende captives who had been captured and sold to European slave traders and illegally transported by a Portuguese ship from West Africa to Cuba, in violation of European treaties against the Atlantic slave trade. Spanish plantation owners Don José Ruiz and Don Pedro Montes bought 53 captives in Havana, Cuba, including four children, and were transporting them on the ship to their plantations near Puerto Príncipe (modern Camagüey, Cuba). The revolt began after Sengbe Pieh (also known as Joseph Cinqué) unshackled himself and the others on the third day. They took control of the ship, killing the captain and the cook.
