American Football Association Of Finland
American Football Association of Finland (Finnish: Suomen Amerikkalaisen Jalkapallon Liitto, abbreviated SAJL) is the national governing body of American football in Finland. It was founded in 1979 and it is a founding member of the European Federation of American Football, IFAF Europe, EFAF and International Federation of American Football, International Federation of American Football, IFAF. Since 2000, American football has grown steadily. In 2006 there were 27 clubs playing the sport with over 100 teams and over 1400 players. In 2012, the association's competitions fielded over 150 teams with more than 2200 licensed players. The President of the American Football Association of Finland is Roope Noronen. Members The sport, like it is in the vast majority of other sports, is club-based in Finland. In 2013, the association had a total of 36 active member clubs. International Federation Of American Football
The International Federation of American Football (IFAF) is the international governing body of American football associations. The IFAF oversees the organisation and promotion of all international competitions across both contact and non contact versions of the game, including the IFAF World Championship of American Football, which is held every four years. The IFAF became a provisionary member of SportAccord in 2003, and became a full SportAccord member in 2005. In 2023, IFAF was officially recognised as an Olympic IF (International Federation) by the IOC. Roope Noronen (born 1974) is the president of American Football Association of Finland, SAJL. Noronen has been the president of SAJL since 2001. The Vaahteraliiga (Maple League) founded in 1980 is the highest level of American football in Finland played under American Football Association of Finland. The winner of the Vaahteraliiga is the Finnish champion. The Vaahteraliiga season is played in summer, with a schedule usually from May to September. Michael Quarshie
Michael Quarshie (born 13 November 1979 in Erlangen, Germany) is a Finnish American football defensive tackle. Quarshie was born in Germany in 1979. After living in Germany for six years and in Ghana for a short period, his family moved to Finland. He graduated from high school and completed his mandatory military service before moving to the U.S. to study and play football. Quarshie is a member of the Finnish men's national team, which captured silver at the 2001 European Championships, and of the Finnish junior men's national team, which captured the 1997 Nordic Championship. He played for the Helsinki Roosters club, winning the Finnish Maple (Championship) Bowl in 1997, 1999, and 2000. Undrafted after his senior season, Quarshie played for the Frankfurt Galaxy the following NFL Europe season. Seppo Evwaraye (born June 1, 1982) is a Finnish former offensive guard in American football and former general manager and interim head coach of Finnish team Wasa Royals of Maple league. Seppo was first signed by Carolina Panthers as a free agent in 2006, and also played for Minnesota Vikings as an international practice squad member. Career Playing career Evwaraye started playing football in his home city of Vaasa, Finland. Ken Meyer
Kenneth W. Meyer (July 14, 1925 – August 14, 2016) was an American American football, football coach at the high school, collegiate and professional levels. He may be best remembered as the head coach of the National Football League (NFL)'s San Francisco 49ers in 1977, and winning two college national championships at Alabama coaching under Bear Bryant. He was a head coach in Finland's top league Vaahteraliiga and for the Finland national American football team. Early years Ken Meyer was the son of Werner Meyer and Pauline (Uhrmacher).
