American Beauty (1927 Film)
''American Beauty'' is a 1927 American silent romantic drama film produced and distributed by First National Pictures. This film was directed by Richard Wallace and starred Billie Dove. It is based on a short story "American Beauty" by Wallace Irwin. Walter McGrail and Margaret Livingston are also in the cast. The story Billie Dove stars as the title character, Millicent Howard, whose appearance and persona bring her a life of luxury. A millionaire named Claverhouse asks her to marry, but she values love more than wealth, and she sacrifices everything for another man, who is less wealthy, Jerry Booth. A number of scenes require Millicent to disrobe except for her underthings. The actress, Billie Dove, is known for her love affair with Howard Hughes. Richard Wallace (director)
Richard Wallace (August 26, 1894 – November 3, 1951) was an American film director. He began working in the editing department at Mack Sennett Studios in the early 1920s. He later moved on to rival Hal Roach Studios where he began directing two-reel films, on some of which he collaborated with Stan Laurel. In 1926, Wallace began directing feature-length films. Several of Wallace's memorable films include three Shirley Temple films, ''A Night to Remember (1943 film), A Night to Remember'' (1943) with Loretta Young, and ''The Little Minister (1934 film), The Little Minister'' (1934) with Katharine Hepburn. He was a founding member of the Directors Guild of America. He died of a heart attack. Lucien Prival
Lucien Prival (July 14, 1901 – June 3, 1994) was an American film actor. He appeared in more than 70 films between 1926 and 1953. Born in New York City, Prival was the son of a German mother and a Russian father. From 1912-1919 he lived with his family in Berlin. After returning to New York, Lucien worked as a salesman in an art store until he was able to land a small role on the stage.Los Angeles Times, February 2, 1927, page a11 He signed with First National Pictures. Lost Film
A lost film is a feature film, feature or short film in which the original negative or copies are not known to exist in any studio archive, private collection, or public archive. Films can be wholly or partially lost for a number of reasons. Early films were not thought to have value beyond their theatrical run, so many were discarded afterward. Nitrate film used in early pictures was highly flammable and susceptible to degradation. The Library of Congress began acquiring copies of American films in 1909, but not all were kept. Due to improvements in film technology and recordkeeping, few films produced in the 1950s or beyond have been lost. Yola d'Avril (8 April 1906 – 2 March 1984) was a French-American actress, who appeared in numerous productions between 1925 and 1953. She was also known as Yola Vermairion and Yola d'Avril Montiague.
