Altos De Chavón
Altos de Chavón is a tourist attraction, a re-creation of a 16th-century Mediterranean–style village, located atop the Chavón River in the city of La Romana, Dominican Republic. It is the most popular attraction in the city and hosts a cultural center, an archeological museum, and an amphitheater. The project was conceived by the Italian architect Roberto Copa and the industrialist Charles Bluhdorn. History The project began in 1976, when a stone mountain had to be blasted for the construction of a nearby road. Charles Bluhdorn, chairman of then Paramount Pictures parent company Gulf+Western, had the idea of using the stones to re-create a sixteenth-century style Mediterranean village, similar to some of the architecture found in the Ciudad Colonial (Santo Domingo), historic center of Santo Domingo. La Romana Province
La Romana () is a province of the Dominican Republic. The capital is also named La Romana, and is the third-largest city in the country. La Romana was elevated to the category of province in 1944. La Romana is also home to '' Casa de Campo'', one of the world's largest resorts and top golfing destinations, including the Teeth of the Dog golf course. Many international and local artists perform at " Altos de Chavón", an artistic community and university. La Romana is a port city ranked as Dominican Republic's seventh-largest by population (around 130,000, metro around 215,000). The Casa de Campo (, for Spanish: ''Country House'') is the largest public park in Madrid. It is situated west of central Madrid, Spain. It gets its name 'Country House' because it was once a royal hunting estate, located just west of the Royal Palace of Madrid. It was created in the early 16th century for use by the royal family and nobility, and was opened to the public in 1931 when it became a public park. Today, it is a popular green space and weekend destination for Madrid residents. Its area is , about five times the size of New York City's Central Park or twice the size of Paris' Bois de Boulogne. The Concert for the Americas was a music festival held on August 20, 1982, in the Dominican Republic at the Altos de Chavón Amphitheater, a 5,000-seat, open-air Greek-style venue located approximately two hours east of Santo Domingo. It was the amphitheater's inaugural event, with performers including Frank Sinatra with Buddy Rich, Heart, and Santana. Santana's set was cut short due to inclement weather. Recordings Charles Bluhdorn, whose Gulf+Western owned both the Altos de Chavón and Paramount Pictures, had Paramount record the concert so it could be rebroadcast worldwide.
