Alliance Of Independent Journalists
The Alliance of Independent Journalists (, abbreviated as AJI) is an Indonesian organization that promotes press freedom in the country. The AJI was founded in 1994 by Satrio Arismunandar, Ahmad Taufik, Goenawan Mohamad, the founder and editor of ''Tempo'' magazine, and Ging Ginanjar in response to the banning by the Suharto government of three magazines: ''Tempo'', ''Editor'', and ''Detik''. The organisation is a member of International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and of the Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SEAPA). AJI is also a member organization of the Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA) and the Global Investigative Journalism Network. Based in Jakarta, Indonesia, AJI is the first independent journalists' association in the country. Satrio Arismunandar
Satrio Arismunandar (born 1961) was a student movement activist from Indonesia. He founded the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) in 1994, as an organization that opposed the Suharto regime and has since become Indonesia's leading body for journalists. Its involvement in the labor movement led to him being forced to step down from the daily newspaper Kompas in 1995. Ahmad Taufik
Ahmad Taufik (pronounced ); (12 July 1965 – 23 March 2017) was an Indonesian newspaper journalist known for his articles critical of the dictatorship of President Suharto. Taufik worked as a reporter at the magazine ''Tempo'' until its banning by Information Minister Harmoko of Suharto's New Order government in 1994. This prohibition set off "nationwide demonstrations and international condemnation". After the magazine's dissolution, Taufik joined other journalists in founding the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI), a group which Suharto's government refused to recognize. Goenawan Mohamad
Goenawan Mohamad (born 29 July 1941) is an Indonesian poet, essayist, playwright and editor. He is the founder and editor of the Indonesian magazine ''Tempo''. Mohamad is a vocal critic of the Indonesian government, and his magazine was periodically shut down due to its criticisms. Mohamad has won awards for his journalistic work, including the CPJ International Press Freedom Awards (1998), the International Editor of the Year Award (1999), and the Dan David Prize (2006). Ging Ginanjar (died 20 January 2019) was an Indonesian journalist instrumental in securing freedom of the press during the transition to Post-Suharto Indonesia. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is the largest global union federation of journalists' trade unions in the world. The Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SEAPA) is the only regional organization focused on promoting and protecting press freedom and freedom of expression in Southeast Asia. The Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN) is "an international association of nonprofit organizations that support, promote and produce investigative journalism."
