Alive (10cc Album)
''Alive'' is a live album by 10cc released in 1993. It was recorded in Japan during the opening nights of the band's comeback tour following the release of the album '' ...Meanwhile''. Overview The line-up of 10cc for the tour consisted of core members Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman, longtime 10cc members Rick Fenn and Stuart Tosh and newcomers Stephen Pigott on keyboards and Gary Wallis on drums. The album is notable to feature several cover versions, which is not typical for 10cc shows. They include two Beatles covers, " Paperback Writer" and “ Across the Universe”, along with a version of " Slow Down" by Larry Williams, which was also recorded by The Beatles. Release and reception The album was originally released in two variations: a 15 track 2-CD set and a 12 track single CD highlights version titled ''Alive: The Very Best Of'', which omitted "Paperback Writer", "Shine a Light in the Dark" and "Slow Down". 10cc
10cc are an English rock music, rock band formed in Stockport, southeast of Manchester, in 1972. The group initially consisted of four musicians, Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, who had written and recorded together since 1968. The four members contributed to songwriting, working together in various permutations. Godley and Creme’s songwriting has been said to be inspired by Art pop, art and cinema. The four members were multi-instrumentalists, singers, writers and producers. Most of the band's records were recorded at their own Strawberry Studios (North) in Stockport and Strawberry Studios (South) in Dorking, with most of those engineered by Stewart. From 1972 to 1978, 10cc had five consecutive UK top-ten albums: ''Sheet Music (10cc album), Sheet Music'' (1974), ''The Original Soundtrack'' (1975), ''How Dare You! (album), How Dare You!'' Slow Down (Larry Williams Song)
"Slow Down" is a rock and roll song written and performed by Larry Williams. Recorded in 1957, AllMusic writer Stewart Mason describes it as "raucous enough to be punk rock nearly a full two decades before the concept was even in existence." Specialty Records released it as a single in 1958, but only the second-side "Dizzy, Miss Lizzy" reached the record charts. Both songs were later covered by the Beatles. Recording Williams recorded the song at Master Recorders, Hollywood, California, on September 11, 1957. Music journalist Gene Sculatti describes the instrumentation provided by the back-up musicians as "unstoppable, nongimmicky, almost careening out of control with its pounding piano and booting sax, 'Slow Down' is arguably Williams's hippest track". Dreadlock Holiday
"Dreadlock Holiday" is a reggae song by 10cc. Written by Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman, it was the lead single from the band's 1978 album, ''Bloody Tourists''. It was a number one hit in several countries. Composition The song was based on real events Eric Stewart and Moody Blues vocalist Justin Hayward experienced in Barbados, and Graham Gouldman experienced in Jamaica. Graham Gouldman commented: "Some of the experiences that are mentioned are true, and some of them are ... fairly true!" Feel The Benefit
"Feel the Benefit" is a song by 10cc appearing on their 1977 album, ''Deceptive Bends''. It is the final track on the album, and is the band's longest studio recording at eleven and a half minutes. The song is a fan favorite, and has been included on many of the band's compilation albums and has been performed live by the band many times since its release. The song showcases a heavy Beatles-influenced sound. Some of its musical elements seem to be directly inspired by the songs "Dear Prudence" (1968) and " Venus and Mars" (1975). Composition The song is a suite in three parts: * I: "Reminisce and Speculate" The first part of the song starts with a slow chord progression played on guitar in a similar fashion to "Dear Prudence". "Art for Art's Sake" is a single by 10cc released in 1975. It was taken from the '' How Dare You!'' album, and, in an edited version, reached No. 5 on the UK singles chart. The title of the song derives from the fact that Graham Gouldman's father, Hymie Gouldman, often used to say "Art for art's sake, money for God's sake, okay". The wordless tape-loop vocals used by the band in their ground-breaking hit "I'm Not in Love" are also clearly audible in the slow sections of the song. Kevin Godley
Kevin Michael Godley (born 7 October 1945) is an English singer-songwriter, drummer and music video director. He was a singer and drummer of the art rock band 10cc and later was part of collaboration duo Godley & Creme with Lol Creme. Early life Kevin Michael Godley was born on 7 October 1945 in Prestwich, Lancashire, England, to a Jewish family, and went to North Cestrian Grammar School in Altrincham. While attending art college in Manchester Godley met future creative partner Lol Creme. Godley and Creme joined the R&B combo the Sabres. Writing and recording The album version of "I'm Mandy Fly Me" features an intro in the form of one of the bridge sections of the band's 1974 song "Clockwork Creep".
