Algoma Central Railway
The Algoma Central Railway is a railway in Northern Ontario, Canada, that operates between Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Sault Ste. Marie and Hearst, Ontario, Hearst. It used to have a branch line to Wawa, Ontario, Wawa. The area served by the railway is sparsely populated, with few roads. The railway is well known for its Agawa Canyon tour train. Until 2015, the line also provided passenger train service to canoeists, snowmobilers, cottagers and tourists accessing this wilderness recreation region. The railway connects at its northernmost point with the Ontario Northland Railway and with CN's eastern division to the south. It also intersects with the Canadian Pacific Kansas City at Franz station, Franz and with the Huron Central Railway at its southernmost point in the Sault. Kewaunee County is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 20,563. Its county seat is Kewaunee. The county was created in 1852 and organized in 1859. Its Menominee name is ''Kewāneh'', an archaic name for a species of duck. Kewaunee County is part of the Green Bay, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area as well as the Green Bay- Shawano, WI Combined Statistical Area. Uniquely in Wisconsin, the county is considered both a high-farming concentration county and a high-manufacturing county by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, meaning at least 20 percent of its earnings came from agriculture and at least 25 percent came from manufacturing. USS Benicia (1868)
USS ''Benicia'' was a screw sloop in the United States Navy during the late 19th century. She was named for Benicia, California. ''Benicia'' was launched 18 August 1868 by Portsmouth Navy Yard as ''Algoma''; renamed ''Benicia'' 15 May 1869; and commissioned 1 December 1869, Commander S. Nicholson in command. Between March 1870 and August 1872 ''Benicia'' served on the Asiatic Station and took part in Rear Admiral John Rodgers' expedition to Korea (16 May—11 June 1871). During this period Ordinary Seaman John Andrews, Chief Quartermaster Patrick H. Grace and two United States Marine Corps Privates, Michael McNamara and James Dougherty, were awarded the Medal of Honor. Algoma-class Sloop
The ''Alaska'' or ''Algoma''-class sloop was a series of screw sloops operated by the US Navy during the later parts of the 19th century. Designed during the American Civil War, only 4 of the 11 planned ships were built, all after the war's end. The class had a brief service life and were all out of service by the early 1890s. Development and design Following the end of the American Civil War, the Union Navy transitioned between wartime mass production and began to develop doctrine for the post-war era. Development of the class began in 1864 with the construction of the ships' engines, although work on building the ships themselves did not start until 1867. The classes' design was based on the ''Ticonderoga''-class sloops, and was intended to be an economic alternative to the ''Contoocook''-class and ''Java''-class frigates. The Algoma Boulevard Historic District is located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. History The district features a string of large, elaborate homes, once known as the "Gold Coast" of Oshkosh. Many were built by lumber barons and officers of their companies.
