Alfred Shaw
Alfred Shaw (29 August 1842 – 16 January 1907) was an eminent Victorian cricketer and rugby footballer, who bowled the first ball in Test cricket and was the first to take five wickets in a Test innings (5/35). He made two trips to North America and four to Australia, captaining the English cricket team in four Test matches on the all-professional tour of Australia in 1881/82, where his side lost and drew two each. He was also, along with James Lillywhite and Arthur Shrewsbury, co-promoter of the tour. He also organised the first British Isles rugby tour to Australasia in 1888. Career Shaw was one of the few cricketers of his time whose Christian name was used more frequently than his initials. Standing only 5'6½" tall, he put on copious weight near the end of his career, when his naturally corpulent build was dramatically accentuated. Al Shaw (catcher)
Alfred Louis Shaw (May 22, 1873 – March 25, 1958), nicknamed "Shoddy", was an English born Major League Baseball catcher who played four seasons with the Detroit Tigers (1901), Boston Americans (1907), Chicago White Sox (1908), and Boston Doves (1909). Shaw was born in Burslem in the English county of Staffordshire, and made his Major League debut at age 28 with the Tigers. He hit .269 with a .321 on-base percentage in 55 games in 1901 with 20 runs and 23 RBIs for the Tigers. Shaw did not play again in the Major Leagues for six years, when he signed with the Boston Americans in 1907. In 76 games for Boston, Shaw hit only .192. His batting average continued to decline in 1908 (.082) and 1909 (.098), and he played his last Major League game for the Doves on September 13, 1909. Mary Shaw (1814 – 9 September 1876) was an English classical contralto who had an active international career in concerts and operas during the 1830s and 1840s. She is best remembered today for creating the role of Cuniza in the world premiere of Giuseppe Verdi's first opera '' Oberto'' at La Scala in 1839. Life and career Born Mary Postans in Kent, daughter of Thomas—the Esq. of Tewkesbury—and Agathe Postans and sister-in-law of the writer Marianne Postans, author of "Western India", Shaw entered the Royal Academy of Music in London in 1828. She studied there through 1831 and was a singing pupil of George Smart at the school. She made her professional singing debut in 1834 as a concert singer, and was highly active as a concert and oratorio singer in her native country for the next five years.
