Alexander Chisholm (1790 – October 9, 1854) was a political figure in Upper Canada. He was born in Scotland in 1790 and migrated to Glengarry County in 1817. In 1825, he became a colonel in the local militia. He represented the county in the 12th and 13th Parliaments. Alexander Chisholm (1792?–1847) was a British portrait and historical painter. Life He was born at Elgin in the year 1792 or 1793, and at an early age was apprenticed by his father to a weaver at Peterhead. He had a great aversion to the trade, and his predilection for art was so strong that he was accustomed to sketch figures upon the cloth on which he was occupied at the loom, and when his leisure permitted him to resort to the sea-shore, he found great pleasure in sketching on the smooth sand. When about fourteen years of age, he walked from Peterhead to Aberdeen, where he received his first lessons in light and shade. At this time there was a meeting of the Synod, the members of which he was permitted to sketch; and his work gave such satisfaction, that he was forthwith commissioned to paint it, but this he was compelled to decline, as he was totally ignorant of the use of colours. Alexander Hugh Chisholm OBE FRZS (28 March 1890 — 10 July 1977) also known as Alec Chisholm, was a noted Australian naturalist, journalist, newspaper editor, author and ornithologist. He was a member of the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union (RAOU), President of the RAOU 1939–1940, and editor of its journal the ''Emu'' from 1926 to 1928. In 1941 he was elected a Fellow of the RAOU in 1941 and the previous year he had been the first recipient of the Australian Natural History Medallion for his work in ornithology and popularising natural history. Chisholm was a prolific and popular writer of articles and books, mainly on birds and nature but also on history, literature and biography. Early life Alec H. Alexander Chisholm (MP)
Alexander William Chisholm, 25th of Chisholm (1810-1838) was a Scottish landowner, chief of Clan Chisholm, and member of the UK Parliament for Inverness-shire from 1835 to 1838. He inherited his father's lands at age 7, but met an untimely death aged 28, arising from an aortic aneurysm, shortly after resigning his parliamentary seat. He was, in 1831, responsible for contributing to the Highland Clearances by evicting the majority of the settled and ancient tenantry from his lands in Strathglass.
