Aldridge is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Walsall in the West Midlands, England. It is historically, a village that was part of Staffordshire until 1974. The town is from Brownhills, from Walsall, from Sutton Coldfield and from Lichfield. The town is also the second-largest town in the Walsall Borough (by population, after Walsall). History The name "Aldridge" is derived from the Anglo-Saxon ''alr'' or ''alre'' + ''wīc'' meaning 'alder (tree) + village'. Another suggestion is that the name "Aldridge" means "outlying farm among alder-trees", from the Old English ''alor'' and ''wīc''. It was recorded as ''Alrewic'' in the Domesday Book of 1086 when it was valued at 15 shillings and had a population of seven households; the Lord was Robert (d'Oilly) and the tenant-in-chief was William son of Ansculf. Aldridge-Brownhills Urban District
Aldridge-Brownhills was an urban district in Staffordshire, England from 1966 to 1974. The district was formed in accordance with a recommendation of the Local Government Commission for England on 1 April 1966. It was created by the amalgamation of the Aldridge and Brownhills urban districts, along with part of Lichfield Rural District, and small parts of the county boroughs of Birmingham and Walsall and the municipal borough of Sutton Coldfield. The urban district had a short existence, as it was abolished in 1974. Aldridge Gardens is a 30-acre (121,000 m2) garden, prominently featuring hydrangeas, located on the former Aldridge Estate in Hoover, Alabama, United States. Local nurseryman Eddie Aldridge purchased the property from the Coxe family in 1977 as a residence. Aldridge, who along with his father, Loren L. Aldridge, found and patented ''Hydrangea quercifolia'' 'Snowflake', a double-flowering form of Oakleaf Hydrangea. Aldridge Knight Bousfield (April 5, 1941 – October 4, 2020), known as "Pete", was an American mathematician working in algebraic topology, known for the concept of Bousfield localization. Work and life Bousfield obtained both his undergraduate degree (1963) and his doctorate (1966) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His doctoral thesis, entitled "Higher Order Suspension Maps for Non-Additive Functors", was written under the supervision of Daniel Kan. He was a lecturer and assistant professor at Brandeis University and moved to the University of Illinois at Chicago where he worked from 1972 to his retirement in 2000. Bousfield married Marie Vastersavendts, a Belgian mathematician, in 1968. She worked as demographer for the city of Chicago and died in 2016. The Aldridge Sisters, Sheila and Sherry Aldridge, are an American singing act that appeared on ''The Lawrence Welk Show'' from 1977 to 1982.
