Alden Knipe
Alden Arthur Knipe (June 1870 – May 22, 1950) was an American football player and coach. He served as the sixth head football coach at the University of Iowa, serving from 1898 to 1902 and compiling a record of 30–11–4. Knipe was also the first head baseball coach at Iowa, coaching two seasons from 1900 to 1901 and tallying a mark 25–8. Knipe played college football at the University of Pennsylvania. After retiring from coaching, he authored numerous books for children. Playing career Knipe was one of the great football players of the nineteenth century. He played at the University of Pennsylvania for the legendary George Washington Woodruff. In 1893, Knipe scored a touchdown for the Penn Quakers in a game against a Walter Camp-coached Yale team. The Northern Iowa Panthers football program represents the University of Northern Iowa in college football at the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level as member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC). Otto Wagonhurst
Otman Franklin "Otto" Wagonhurst (sometimes spelled Wagenhorst or Wagenhurst; April 25, 1871 – June 15, 1932) was an American football player and coach. Wagonhurst played college football as a left tackle at the University of Pennsylvania from 1892 to 1895. He served as the head football coach at the University of Alabama in 1896 and at the University of Iowa in 1897, compiling a career record of 6–5. After coaching college football, he played professionally for Pittsburgh's Duquesne Country and Athletic Club and the Homestead Library and Athletic Club. He won circuit championship titles with Duquesne in 1898 and 1899 and Homestead in 1900. After his football career, he went on to become a railway executive. Frank Holbrook
Frank Kinney Holbrook (c. 1874 in Tipton, Iowa – October 29, 1916) was the first African American intercollegiate athlete at the University of Iowa and one of the first African Americans to participate on an American college varsity athletic squad. He played on the Iowa football team and lettered in both football and track in 1895 and 1896. He was Iowa's leading scorer in 1896 and led the Hawkeyes to their first football conference title in school history. Background Frank Holbrook grew up in Tipton, IA. Western Interstate University Football Association
The Western Interstate University Football Association (WIUFA) was one of the first intercollegiate athletic conferences in the United States, existing from 1892 to 1897. Formation, history and evolution The football teams from the Universities of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska formed the conference and competed against each other annually. Early WIUFA play led to the transition of the famous rivalry between Kansas and Missouri to the football field as many of the fans and some of the first players on both teams were the sons of men who had fought each other on either side of the conflict in Bleeding Kansas and later the Civil War. Racial tension surrounding the participation of Iowa's Frank Kinney Holbrook in the 1896 game between Iowa and Missouri ended up preventing what may have become a long-standing rivalry between the two schools. Roger Sherman (April 19, 1721 – July 23, 1793) was an early American politician, lawyer, and a Founding Father of the United States. Representing Connecticut, he is the only person to sign all four great state papers of the United States: the Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. Benjamin Shenstone "Sport" Donnelly (October 18, 1869 – August 3, 1922) was an American football player and coach. He was the second-ever known professional football player, after Pudge Heffelfinger. He was paid $250 for one game on November 19, 1892 by the Allegheny Athletic Association, for a game against the Washington & Jefferson Presidents football team. The November 19 date was exactly seven days after the team paid Heffelfinger $500 for a game. In 1893, Donnelly was hired by the Allegheny Athletic Association as player-coach, making him the first man to ever coach a known pro team. Heffelfinger once said that Donnelly was the only man that he had played against who "could slug you and at the same time keep his eyes on the ball".
