Albion (comics)
''Albion'' is a six-issue comic book limited series plotted by Alan Moore, written by his daughter Leah Moore and her husband John Reppion, with covers by Dave Gibbons and art by Shane Oakley and George Freeman. The series aimed to revive classic IPC-owned British comics characters, all of whom appeared in comics published by Odhams Press and Amalgamated Press/Fleetway Publications/IPC Media during the 1960s and early 1970s, such as '' Smash!'', '' Valiant'', and ''Lion''.Contino, Jennifer M"Andrew Sumner & ''Albion''" Comicon.com (22 Feb. 2005). Dave Gibbons
David Chester Gibbons (born 14 April 1949) is an English comics artist, writer and sometimes letterer. He is best known for his collaborations with writer Alan Moore, which include the miniseries ''Watchmen'' and the Superman story " For the Man Who Has Everything". He was an artist for '' 2000 AD'', for which he contributed a large body of work from its first issue in 1977. Early life Gibbons was born on 14 April 1949, at Forest Gate Hospital in London, to Chester, a town planner, and Gladys, a secretary. He began reading comic books at the age of seven. A self-taught artist, he illustrated his own comic strips. Gibbons became a building surveyor but eventually entered the UK comics industry as a letterer for IPC Media. He left his surveyor job to focus on his comics career. Fleetway Publications
Fleetway Publications was a magazine publishing company based in London. History It was founded in 1959 when the Mirror Group acquired the Amalgamated Press, then based at Fleetway House, Farringdon Street, London. It was one of the companies that merged into the IPC group in 1963, and the Fleetway banner continued to be used until 1968 when all IPC's publications were reorganised into the unitary IPC Magazines. In 1987 IPC's comics line was sold to Robert Maxwell as Fleetway Publications. Egmont UK bought Fleetway from Maxwell in 1991, merging it with their own comics publishing operation, ''London Editions'', to form Fleetway Editions, but the name "Fleetway" ceased to appear on their comics some time after 2002. ''Valiant'' was a weekly British comics periodical published by Fleetway Publications and later IPC Magazines from 4 October 1962 to 16 October 1976. A boys' adventure comic, it debuted numerous memorable characters, including Captain Hurricane, The Steel Claw and Mytek the Mighty. ''Valiant'' lasted for 712 issues before being merged with stablemate '' Battle Picture Weekly''. America's Best Comics (ABC) was a comic book publishing brand. It was set up by Alan Moore in 1999 as an imprint of WildStorm, an idea proposed to Moore by WildStorm founder Jim Lee when it was still under Image Comics. Andrew Sumner is a British journalist, editor, TV presenter and publisher. Sumner wrote for the comics news magazine ''Speakeasy'' in the 1980s. He was a movie journalist for the NME, Vox and Total Film throughout the 1990s and wrote regularly for '' Uncut''. Sumner published various magazines for Emap before joining IPC as publisher of '' Loaded'' and '' Uncut''. He launched ''Uncut DVD'' and later published ''Now'' magazine. ''Lion'' was a weekly British comics periodical published by Amalgamated Press (and later Fleetway Publications and IPC Magazines) from 23 February 1952 to 18 May 1974. A boys' adventure comic, ''Lion'' was originally designed to compete with ''Eagle'', the popular weekly comic published by Hulton Press that had introduced Dan Dare. It debuted numerous memorable characters, including Captain Condor, Robot Archie, Paddy Payne and the Spider. ''Lion'' lasted for 1,156 issues before being merged with stablemate '' Valiant''.
