The Alabama and Florida Railroad was a line of rail track connecting Pensacola, Florida with Montgomery, Alabama during the late 1850s and early 1860s. The portion of the line in Alabama was first owned by the Alabama and Florida Rail Road Company (of Alabama), while the portion of the line in Florida was owned by the Alabama and Florida Railroad (of Florida). First attempt (1834–1838) Citizens of Pensacola, led by William Henry Chase, a captain in the United States Army Corps of Engineers, developed a plan to construct a railroad from Pensacola to the interior of Alabama in the early 1830s. The Florida, Alabama and Georgia Rail Road was chartered by the Florida Territory in February 1834 to build a railroad from Pensacola to the border with Alabama. In December 1834, Alabama chartered the Alabama, Florida and Georgia Rail Road to connect the Florida railroad with Columbus, Georgia. Alabama, Florida And Gulf Railroad
The Alabama, Florida and Gulf Railroad was an American railroad which ran from Ardilla, Alabama to Greenwood, Florida. The line started as a logging railroad owned by the E.L. Marbury Lumber Company of Dothan, Alabama, running from Ardilla to Malone, Florida, where the company had a sawmill. Marbury Lumber incorporated the railroad as the Alabama, Florida and Southern Railroad in 1910. The railroad was sold in 1917 to W. S. Wilson, who changed its name to the Alabama, Florida and Gulf Railroad, and extended the track from Malone to Greenwood. The railroad was placed in receivership in 1924 and sold after foreclosure to the Bank of Dothan. The bank was in turn placed in receivership. The railroad was sold for $10,000 in 1936, and the name was changed again to the Alabama and Florida Railroad. The Alabama and Florida Railroad was a short-line railroad which operated in Alabama and Florida. The company operated a former Louisville and Nashville Railroad (L&N) line between Georgiana, Alabama and Geneva, Alabama. Pioneer Railcorp acquired the line in 1992 and created a new company, the Alabama and Florida Railway, to operate it. History The Alabama and Florida (A&F) owned two routes: Georgiana, Alabama–Geneva, Alabama and Crestview, Florida– Florala, Alabama. The Georgiana line was begun in 1898 by the Alabama and Florida Railroad and completed by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad in 1902. The Crestview line opened in 1894 under the Yellow River Railroad, which was acquired by the L&N in 1906. Both lines passed to the Seaboard System Railroad, the L&N's successor, in 1982.
