Al Abdelaziz
Alaa Abdelaziz is an American Democratic Party politician who represents the 35th Legislative District in the New Jersey General Assembly since January 2025. Abdelaziz was selected to fill the vacancy following Benjie Wimberly's resignation to join the New Jersey Senate in 2025. He previously served on the Paterson City Council. Political career Paterson City Council New Jersey General Assembly Abdelaziz was selected in a special election convention to fill the vacancy following Benjie Wimberly's resignation, defeating Prospect Park mayor Mohamed Khairullah with 128 to 31 delegate votes. He is the first Palestinian American to serve in the chamber. Abdelaziz serves in the Assembly on the Education; Higher Education; and Housing committees. |
New Jersey's 35th Legislative District
New Jersey's 35th legislative district is one of 40 districts that make up the map for the New Jersey Legislature. It encompasses the Bergen County municipalities of Elmwood Park and Garfield and the Passaic County municipalities of Haledon, North Haledon, Paterson, and Prospect Park. Demographic information As of the 2020 United States census, the district had a population of 238,160, of whom 179,831 (75.5%) were of voting age. The racial makeup of the district was 64,563 (27.1%) White, 46,103 (19.4%) African American, 2,962 (1.2%) Native American, 12,901 (5.4%) Asian, 96 (0.0%) Pacific Islander, 79,289 (33.3%) from some other race, and 32,246 (13.5%) from two or more races. Prospect Park is a borough in Passaic County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2020 United States census, the borough's population was 6,372, an increase of 507 (+8.6%) from the 2010 census count of 5,865, which in turn reflected an increase of 86 (+1.5%) from the 5,779 counted in the 2000 census. Shavonda E. Sumter (born January 19, 1974) is an American Democratic Party politician who has represented the 35th Legislative District in the New Jersey General Assembly since taking office in January 2012. In February 2025, Sumter announced that she would not be running in the 2025 New Jersey General Assembly election. Personal Sumter was born in Paterson, New Jersey, the daughter of Charles and Bonnie Williams. She attended public and private schools in Paterson, Prospect Park, and Haledon.
