Akyem Mine
Akyem mine is an open-pit gold mine near New Abirem in the Eastern Region of Ghana. It is owned by Newmont. The mine was developed in 2005, with commercial production beginning in 2013. The mine has resulted in environmental conflict in which farmers displaced by the mine complain that they were not fairly compensated for their lands; their protests have been violently suppressed. An international jury of NGOs criticised Newmont by awarding the company the Public Eye on Davos award for shameful violation of environmental and ethical principles in its mining activities in Ghana. New Abirem is a small town in south Ghana and the capital of the Birim North District, a district in the Eastern Region of south Ghana Ghana (; tw, Gaana, ee, Gana), officially the Republic of Ghana, is a country in West Africa. The Public Eye on Davos, held every year between 2000 and 2015, was a counter-event to the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos. The project involved non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from around the world and was coordinated by Swiss organizations Erklärung von Bern (EvB, renamed "Public Eye" in 2016) and Greenpeace Switzerland. Ahafo Mine
The Ahafo mine is one of the largest gold mines in the Republic of Ghana and in the world. The mine is located in the center of the country in Brong-Ahafo Region. The mine has estimated reserves of 17 million oz of gold. The company has been accused of "human rights abuses and irresponsible practices" by Earthworks, an environmental organization, and others. Nonetheless, from its Ahafo and Akyem mines, Newmont is also the largest gold mining conglomerate in Ghana, (that is if one doesn’t consider Gold Fields’ interests in Asanko).
