Tony Awards
The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre, more commonly known as a Tony Award, recognizes excellence in live Broadway theatre. The awards are presented by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League at an annual ceremony in Manhattan. The ceremony is usually held in June. The awards are given for Broadway productions and performances. One is also given for regional theatre. Several discretionary non-competitive awards are given as well, including a Special Tony Award, the Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre, and the Isabelle Stevenson Award. The awards were founded by theatre producer and director Brock Pemberton. They are named after Antoinette "Tony" Perry, an actress, producer and theatre director who was co-founder and secretary of the American Theatre Wing. Christina Anderson (playwright)
Christina Anderson is an American playwright and educator. She is best known for her plays ''Good Goods'' and ''Inked Baby''. Her work has received several honors and awards, including two Playwrights of New York (PoNY) nominations as well as the Lorraine Hansberry Award. Anderson is a Resident Playwright at the organization New Dramatists and the social justice theatre company Epic Theatre Ensemble. She has served as an Assistant Professor of Playwriting at Purchase College, and as the interim Head of Playwriting at Brown University. Life and career Born and raised in Kansas City, Kansas, Anderson obtained her bachelor's degree from Brown University and a Master of Fine Arts in the Yale School of Drama's Playwriting Program. ''MJ the Musical'' is a jukebox musical based on the life of the American entertainer Michael Jackson, focusing on his creative process prior to the Dangerous World Tour. It features Jackson's music, with a book by Lynn Nottage, and direction & choreography by Christopher Wheeldon. Lynn Nottage
Lynn Nottage (born November 2, 1964) is an American playwright whose work often focuses on the experience of working-class people, particularly working-class people who are black. She has received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama twice: in 2009 for her play '' Ruined'', and in 2017 for her play ''Sweat''. She was the first (and remains the only) woman to have won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama two times. Nottage is the recipient of a MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship and was included in ''Time'' magazine's 2019 list of the 100 Most Influential People. Dominique Morisseau (born March 13, 1978) is an American playwright and actress from Detroit, Michigan. She has written more than nine plays, three of which are part of a cycle titled ''The Detroit Project.'' She received a MacArthur Fellowship (also known as the 'Genius Grant') in 2018. Early life Morisseau was born and grew up in Detroit, Michigan, with her mother and father. Her mother's family is from Mississippi and her father's family is from Haiti. Jones and Jim Lewis, based on music and lyrics by the late Nigerian singer Fela Kuti, with additional music by Aaron Johnson and Jordan McLean and additional lyrics by Jim Lewis.
