Aethiothemis Carpenteri
''Aethiothemis carpenteri'' is a species of dragonfly in the family Libellulidae. It was originally described as ''Oxythemis carpenteri'', named in honor of the collector of the type specimen, G. D. Hale Carpenter. The name is considered by some authorities to be a taxonomic synonym of '' Aethiothemis solitaria'', though the taxonomy of the ''solitaria'' species complex is not clear. Frederic Charles Fraser
Frederic Charles Fraser (15 February 1880, in Woolwich – 2 March 1963, in Linwood) was an England, English entomologist who specialised in Odonata. Following army service in India as a surgeon with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel (United Kingdom), lieutenant colonel, Fraser devoted himself entirely to dragonflies, mostly in the Natural History Museum, London, British Museum (Natural History), where his collection is maintained. Fraser's correspondence with A. Eric Gardner is in the library of the Natural History Museum, London. Fraser's correspondence with the Irish odonatologist Niall McNeill is in the Oxford University Museum. He was a fellow of the Royal Entomological Society. Dragonfly
A dragonfly is a flying insect belonging to the infraorder Anisoptera below the order Odonata. About 3,000 extant species of dragonflies are known. Most are tropical, with fewer species in temperate regions. Loss of wetland habitat threatens dragonfly populations around the world. Adult dragonflies are characterised by a pair of large, multifaceted, compound eyes, two pairs of strong, transparent wings, sometimes with coloured patches, and an elongated body. Libellulidae
The chasers, darters, skimmers, and perchers and their relatives form the Libellulidae, the largest family of dragonflies. It is sometimes considered to contain the Corduliidae as the subfamily Corduliinae and the Macromiidae as the subfamily Macromiinae. Even if these are excluded (as Silsby does), there remains a family of over 1000 species. With nearly worldwide distribution, these are the most commonly encountered dragonflies. The genus '' Libellula'' is mostly New World but also has one of the few endangered odonates from Japan: '' Libellula angelina''. Geoffrey Douglas Hale Carpenter
G.D. Hale Carpenter MBE (26 October 1882 in Eton, Berkshire – 30 January 1953 in Oxford) was a British entomologist and medical doctor. He worked first at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and in Uganda, on tse-tse flies and sleeping sickness. His main work in zoology was on mimicry in butterflies, an interest he developed in Uganda and Tanganyika. He succeeded E.B. Poulton as Hope Professor of Zoology at Oxford University from 1933 to 1948. Biography Douglas was a son of Philip Herbert Carpenter DSc FRS, a schoolmaster at Eton College; a grandson of the naturalist and physiologist William Benjamin Carpenter; and a great-grandson of Lant Carpenter, a Unitarian minister.
