''Aechmea lueddemanniana'' is a species of flowering plant in the family ''Bromeliaceae''. It is native to Costa Rica, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua and southern Mexico as far north as Veracruz. The plant is widely cultivated as an ornamental. Retrieved 11 October 2009 Description The pink flowers are tube-shaped and the flowering period extends from June to August. The fruits are purplish berries. Karl Koch (botanist)
Karl Heinrich Emil Koch (6 June 1809 – 25 May 1879) was a German botanist. He is best known for his botanical explorations in the Caucasus region, including northeast Turkey. Most of his collections have today been lost. He is also known as the first professional horticultural officer in Germany. Biography He was born in Ettersburg near Weimar, Germany. He studied at the universities of Jena and Würzburg and taught, as privatdocent, at the University of Jena beginning 1834. He became an associate professor in 1836. The Orto Botanico dell'Università di Genova (1 hectare), also known as the Orto Botanico di Genova, is a botanical garden operated by the University of Genoa, and located at Corso Dogali, Genoa, Liguria, Italy. The garden was established in 1803 by Professor Domenico Viviani on the former estate of the Jesuit College of St. Jerome in Balbi. By 1819 its catalog listed 1011 taxon, taxa, of which 60% were medicinal plants of European origin. It was extended in 1835 by an additional 4,000 square metres spread over two large terraces. Carl Christian Mez (26 March 1866 – 8 January 1944) was a German botanist and university professor. He is denoted by the author abbreviation when citing a botanical name. Life and work Mez came from a family of industrialists in Freiburg im Breisgau, Baden. He was a grandchild of the entrepreneur and politician Karl Christian Mez (1808–1877). As a high-school student he was interested in botany, and wrote a technical paper regarding a hybrid ''Inula''. In 1890, Mez married Therese (Thea) Jensen (1867–1937), the daughter of poet Wilhelm Jensen. They had 5 children together. Through their oldest daughter's marriage, they became parents-in-law to psychologist Narziß Ach.
