''Acanthostigma'' is a genus in the Tubeufiaceae family of fungi. Three new species were reported in 2010, growing from decomposing wood in Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the United States. The three new bitunicate ascomycetes belonging to the genus Acanthostigma are described from terrestrial decomposing wood collected from Great Smoky Mountains National Park, USA. Phylogenetic analyses of the nuclear ribosomal 28S large subunit and internal transcribed spacer region placed all three species in the Tubeufiaceae and confirmed morphological analyses that these are distinct species. Expanded phylogenetic analyses of 28S large subunit including taxa throughout the Dothideomycetes confirmed the placement of Acanthostigma in the Tubeufiaceae. Acanthostigma filiforme differs from other Acanthostigma species in having longer ascospores with more septa. Giuseppe De Notaris (18 April 1805, Milan – 22 January 1877) was an Italian botanist generally known for his work with cryptogams native to Italy. He studied medicine at the University of Pavia, obtaining his medical degree in 1830. Having developed an interest in botany, by 1832 he had abandoned the field of medicine. In 1836 he accepted an assignment at the botanical garden in Turin, and a few years later, was named professor of botany and director of the botanical garden at the University of Genoa (1839). In 1872 he was appointed chair of botany at the University of Rome. In the field of mycology, he proposed the fungi family Hypocreaceae (1845).
