Abudefduf Sordidus
''Abudefduf sordidus'', commonly known as the Blackspot sergeant or kūpīpī in Hawaii, is a large solitaryDamselfish in the family Pomacentridae common in the tropical Indo-Pacific. Description Blackspot sergeant have a zebra stripe look (yellowish-grey with six brown broad bars to brown with six to seven narrow light bars) and a black spot at the upper base of the tail. They can reach up to 24 cm in length and are known to live up to nine years in the wild. Habitat and behavior Blackspot sergeant are common in tidepools and rocky shallow areas (0-3m) with moderate surge. Juvenile Blackspot sergeant are common in tidepools where they feed on algae, small animals as well as plankton. Once they mature and become bigger, they move towards deeper areas with more surge. Damselfish are those within the subfamilies Abudefdufinae, Chrominae, Lepidozyginae, Pomacentrinae, and Stegastenae within the family Pomacentridae. Most species within this group are relatively small, with the largest species being about 30cm (12 in) in length. Most damselfish species exist only in marine environments, but a few inhabit brackish or fresh water. These fish are found globally in tropical, subtropical, and temperate waters. Pomacentridae is a family of ray-finned fish, comprising the damselfishes and clownfishes. This family were formerly placed in the order Perciformes but are now regarded as being ''incertae sedis'' in the subseries Ovalentaria in the clade Percomorpha. The name is from Arabic ''abu'', "the one with"; and ''def'', "side", and the intensive plural ending ''-duf''. The name thus means "the one with prominent sides".
