Absurdistan
Absurdistan is a term sometimes used to satire, satirically describe a country in which absurdity is the norm due to the ubiquity and incompetence of its bureaucracy. The expression was originally used by Eastern bloc dissidents to refer to parts (or all) of the Soviet Union and its Soviet satellite, satellite states, but has remained common in post-communism, post-communist discourse as well. Origins The first known printed use of the word "Absurdistan" appeared in 1971 in the Germany, German monthly ". Later, in Czech language, Czech, the term was used by dissident and later president Václav Havel. This seems to indicate that use of the term began during perestroika. -stan ( Persian: ستان )(Sanskrit: ''sthān'' or ''sthānam)'' is a Persian suffix that has the meaning of "a place abounding in" or "place where anything abounds" as a suffix. It is widely used by Iranian languages (mainly Persian) and the Indic languages (mainly Sanskrit, Prakrit and Hindustani) as well as the Turkic languages (excluding Siberian Turkic), Dravidic languages (mainly Brahui and Kannada) and other languages. Satire
Satire is a genre of the visual, literary, and performing arts, usually in the form of fiction and less frequently non-fiction, in which vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings are held up to ridicule, often with the intent of exposing or shaming the perceived flaws of individuals, corporations, government, or society itself into improvement. Although satire is usually meant to be humorous, its greater purpose is often constructive social criticism, using wit to draw attention to both particular and wider issues in society. Satire may also poke fun at popular themes in art and film. A prominent feature of satire is strong irony or sarcasm—"in satire, irony is militant", according to literary critic Northrop Frye— but parody, burlesque, exaggeration, juxtaposition, comparison, analogy, and double entendre are all frequently used in satirical speech and writing. ''The Village Voice'' is an American news and culture publication based in Greenwich Village, New York City, known for being the country's first alternative newsweekly. Goethes Erben (Goethe's Heirs) is a musical group from Germany started in 1989 by Oswald Henke and Peter Seipt. History The founding idea for Goethes Erben was to combine German spoken words with musical theater. They are one of the first Neue Deutsche Todeskunst bands. By 1991, Peter had left the band and was replaced by American Mindy Kumbalek in February. Their debut album ''Das Sterben ist ästhetisch bunt'' was released in 1991. The band's unique blend of music and theater lends itself well to multimedia releases, and they have used DVDs with pictures, interviews and concert footage since 2001. Goethes Erben have established themselves as favorite festival band, playing at M'era Luna 2001, the Eurorock Festival in Belgium, and Wave-Gotik-Treffen 2002. Gothic Rock
Gothic rock (also called goth rock or simply goth) is a style of rock music that emerged from post-punk in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. The first post-punk bands which shifted toward dark music with gothic overtones include Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, Bauhaus (band), Bauhaus, and the Cure. The genre itself was defined as a separate movement from post-punk. Gothic rock stood out due to its darker sound, with the use of primarily minor or bass chords, reverb, dark arrangements, or dramatic and melancholic melodies, having inspirations in gothic literature allied with themes such as sadness, nihilism, dark romanticism, tragedy, melancholy and morbidity. These themes are often approached poetically. Darkwave
Dark wave, or darkwave, is a music genre that emerged from the new wave and post-punk movement of the late 1970s. Dark wave compositions are largely based on minor key tonality and introspective lyrics and have been perceived as being dark, romantic and bleak, with an undertone of sorrow. Common features include the use of chordophones such as electric and acoustic guitar, violin and piano, as well as electronic instruments such as synthesizer, sampler and drum machine. Lubomyr Yaroslav Luciuk (born July 9, 1953) is a Canadian academic and author of books and articles in the field of political geography and Ukrainian history. Until January 2025 he was a full professor at the Royal Military College of Canada. He is a Senior Research Fellow of the Chair of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Toronto. Background and education Luciuk was born and raised in Kingston, Ontario. The Eastern Bloc, also known as the Communist Bloc (Combloc), the Socialist Bloc, the Workers Bloc, and the Soviet Bloc, was an unofficial coalition of communist states of Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America that were aligned with the Soviet Union and existed during the Cold War (1947–1991).
