Abdul Lateef (Fijian Lawyer)
Abdul Lateef (died on 6 June 2008) was a Fiji Indian football administrator, lawyer and politician. He served as the President of the Fiji Football Association from 1960–1962 and from 1966 to 1967. He was elected into the Legislative Council in 1966 from the Southern Indian cross-voting constituency on the Alliance ticket. In 2007 he was made a life member of the Fiji Law Society. Fiji Football Association
The Fiji Football Association is the governing body of football in Fiji. It came into existence in 1961. It is the overseeing body of the Fiji National Team and its leagues. History Football started to be played in Fiji ever since the arrival of Europeans in Fiji and establishment of towns like Levuka where significant numbers of sports enthusiasts could congregate and socialise with a friendly game. Missionaries, who established schools in Fiji, introduced football as part of the school program and football was being played in schools as early as 1889. The Suva Soccer Football Club was formed in 1905, made up of European employees of the Government and businesses and similar clubs existed in Nausori and Levuka. Legislative Council Of Fiji
The Legislative Council of Fiji was the colonial precursor to the present-day Parliament, which came into existence when Fiji became independent on 10 October 1970. The first Legislative Council Immediately after Fiji was ceded to the United Kingdom, on 10 October 1874, the first Governor, Sir Hercules Robinson, established an Executive Council with himself as President and comprising six other Europeans. This was a temporary measure to make policy decisions necessary to found and legitimise the new Colonial Government and to carry out the day-to-day affairs of the Government. With the arrival of Sir Arthur Gordon, on 1 September 1875, a permanent machinery for governing the new colony was established. Alliance Party (Fiji)
The Alliance Party, was the ruling political party in Fiji from 1966 to 1987. Founded in the early 1960s, its leader was Kamisese Mara, the founding father of the modern Fijian nation. Widely seen as the political vehicle of the traditional Fijian chiefs, the Alliance Party also commanded considerable support among the Europeans and other ethnic minorities, who, although comprising only 3–4% of Fiji's population, were over represented in the parliament (with a third of the seats before 1973, and a sixth thereafter, allocated to them). Indo-Fijians were less supportive, but the Fijian-European block vote kept the Alliance Party in power for more than twenty years. The number of Fiji Indians that could be elected to the Legislative Council was fixed over the years as follows: * 1916 - 1929 - one nominated member. * 1929 - 1937 - three elected members. * 1937 - 1963 - three elected and two nominated members. * 1963 - 1966 - four elected and two nominated. * 1966 - 1972 - nine elected from communal constituencies and three from cross-voting constituencies. List of Indian members * Badri Maharaj (1916–1923, 1926–1929) was the first Indian member of the Legislative Council in Fiji. He was nominated by the Governor in 1916 and was not very popular with Fiji Indians who wanted Manilal Doctor to be their representative. Maharaj resigned in 1923 in opposition to a proposed poll tax, but was re-nominated in 1926.
