A Toast To Melba
''A Toast to Melba'' is a 1976 Australian play by Jack Hibberd. A biography of Dame Nellie Melba, Hibberd described ''A Toast to Melba'' as: Another 'Popular Play' like ''The Les Darcy Show''. Using the Epic Theatre techniques of Bertolt Brecht (without politics), the play encompasses the life of diva Nellie Melba from childhood in Melbourne to her death in Egypt (alleged dying words: "I never did like Aida.")... The actress who plays Melba must be able to sing a few arias and parlour songs. There is a selection of recorded music that is essential to the work. The play is one of Hibberd's personal favourites. 1980 TV adaptation The play was adapted with Robyn Nevin in the title role by the ABC in 1980 as part of the ''Australian Theatre Festival''. Alan Burke's direction won him a Sammy Award. The production was much praised and was sold abroad. Jack Hibberd
John Charles Hibberd (12 April 1940 – 30 August 2024) was an Australian playwright best known for his plays '' Dimboola'' (1969) and '' A Stretch of the Imagination'' (1972). He was also a physician. Biography John Charles Hibberd was born in Warracknabeal, Victoria in 1940. He pursued his medical studies at the University of Melbourne and was associated with Newman College during his time there. He held the position of registrar at St Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne, in the Department of Social Medicine from 1966 to 1967. Following this, he practiced as a general practitioner until 1984, after which he specialized in clinical immunology. He was married to actress Evelyn Krape, with whom he had two children, as well as two children from a previous marriage. In 1970, Hibberd played a pivotal role in establishing the Australian Performing Group (APG), where he remained an active member for a decade, including a two-year tenure as chairman. Anna Volska (born 1 December 1944 in Milanówek, Poland) is an Australian stage and television actress. She arrived in Australia when she was young and has acted from a young age. Early life Anna Volska moved from Poland to Australia with her mother when she was seven. She graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA)in 1962. Career Theatre Volska has acted extensively in theatre as an actor, director and teacher. Henri Szeps () (born October 2, 1943), also spelled Henry Szeps, is a Swiss-born Australian character actor of theatre and television. He has also featured in films and worked in voice roles, and has worked in productions in the United Kingdom. Early life Henri Szeps was born in 1943 in Lausanne, Switzerland, to Polish parents. Prior to the German invasion of Poland during World War II, his parents fled to France in 1938. His father left the family to join the French Resistance. In 1943, his mother Rose and three-year-old sister Maria made their way to a refugee camp in Lausanne, where Henri was born.
