The AO-38 is a 5.45×39mm assault rifle and AK derivative designed by Peter Andreevich Tkachev and first to use the Balanced Automatic Recoil System (BARS) to improve stability giving better accuracy over AK-74's. Gas-operation is a system of operation used to provide energy to operate locked breech, autoloading firearms. In gas-operation, a portion of high-pressure gas from the cartridge being fired is used to power a mechanism to dispose of the spent case and insert a new cartridge into the chamber. The AL-7 is a Soviet assault rifle designed by Izhmash engineer Yury Konstantinovich Aleksandrov, Yury Aleksandrov in the early 1970s. The AL-7 uses a type of operation developed by Peter Andreevich Tkachev, Pyotr Tkachyov of TsNIITochMash (Central Institute for Precision Machine Building) in the mid-1960s known as ''Balanced Automatics'' first used on the AO-38 assault rifle. The Balanced Automatics Recoil System (BARS) replaces the traditional AK-47, Kalashnikov gas piston operating system, reducing the negative effects of recoil and allowing more efficient use of automatic fire. The AN-94 (, GRAU designation 6P33) is a Russian assault rifle. The initials stand for model of 1994, after its chief designer Gennadiy Nikonov, who previously worked on the Nikonov machine gun. The name refers to the Siberian city of Abakan. The AN-94 was designed as a potential replacement to the AK-74 series of rifles currently in service with the Russian Armed Forces.
