ALFRED (nuclear Reactor)
ALFRED (''Advanced Lead-cooled Fast Reactor European Demonstrator'') is a planned lead-cooled fast reactor. Designed by Ansaldo Energia from Italy, it represents the last stage of the ELSY and LEADER projects. Construction ALFRED will be built in the Romanian town of Mioveni near Pitesti. Mioveni
Mioveni () is a town in Argeș County, Romania, approximately north-east of Pitești. , it had a population of 29,317. The town administers four villages: Clucereasa, Colibași, Făgetu, and Racovița. History Mioveni was first mentioned in a written record in 1485. It developed much in the 1970s after the construction of the Automobile Dacia manufacturing plant, inaugurated in 1968. There is also a Nuclear Research Institute, that builds components and materials for the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, and a high security prison. It officially became a town in 1989, as a result of the Romanian rural systematization program. Lead-cooled Fast Reactor
The lead-cooled fast reactor is a nuclear reactor design that uses molten lead or lead-bismuth eutectic as its coolant. These materials can be used as the primary coolant because they have low neutron absorption and relatively low melting points. Neutrons are slowed less by interaction with these heavy nuclei (thus not being neutron moderators) so these reactors operate with fast neutrons. The concept is generally similar to sodium-cooled fast reactors, and most liquid-metal fast reactors have used sodium instead of lead. Few lead-cooled reactors have been constructed, except for the Soviet submarine K-27 and the seven Soviet Alfa-class submarines (though these were beryllium-moderated intermediate energy reactors rather than fast reactors). Fast Breeder Reactor
A breeder reactor is a nuclear reactor that generates more fissile material than it consumes. These reactors can be Nuclear fuel, fueled with more-commonly available isotopes of uranium and Isotopes of thorium, thorium, such as uranium-238 and thorium-232, as opposed to the rare uranium-235 which is used in conventional reactors. These materials are called fertile materials since they can be bred into fuel by these breeder reactors. Fast Neutron Reactor
A fast-neutron reactor (FNR) or fast-spectrum reactor or simply a fast reactor is a category of nuclear reactor in which the fission nuclear chain reaction, chain reaction is sustained by fast neutrons (carrying energies above 1 Electronvolt, MeV, on average), as opposed to slow thermal neutrons used in thermal-neutron reactors. Generation IV (Gen IV) reactors are nuclear reactor design technologies that are envisioned as successors of generation III reactors.
