A684 Road
The A684 is an A road that runs through Cumbria and North Yorkshire, starting at Kendal, Cumbria and ending at Ellerbeck and the A19 road in North Yorkshire. It crosses the full width of the Yorkshire Dales, passing through Garsdale and the full length of Wensleydale. Flooding can be a problem after heavy rain, especially at Appersett, near Hawes, and heavy snow can close the road temporarily at the Black Horse hill and in Garsdale. Dandry Mire Viaduct
Dandry Mire Viaduct, (or Dandrymire Viaduct), is a railway viaduct on the Settle & Carlisle line in Cumbria, England. It is just north of Garsdale railway station, Garsdale station, from , and south of . When the Settle & Carlisle line was being built, the traversing of Dandry Mire was to have been by use of an embankment, but the bog swallowed all of the material poured into it, so a trench was dug instead, and a viaduct constructed. The viaduct, which is long and high, is still open to traffic on the railway, and is a prominent landmark at the Garsdale Head, head of Garsdale. Bainbridge is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 480. The village is situated in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, near the confluence of the River Bain (England's shortest river) with the River Ure. It is west of Northallerton, the county town. The civil parish includes Raydale, and a large area of moorland south of the village. It also includes the hamlets of Worton, and Cubeck east of the village. History The Roman name for Bainbridge was '' Virosidum'' and the remains of a Roman Fort are located just east of Bainbridge, on the other side of the river, on Brough Hill, where various Roman remains have been found. Kirkby Stephen () is a market town and civil parish in Cumbria, England. It lies on the A685 and is surrounded by sparsely populated hill country, about from the nearest larger towns, Kendal and Penrith. M6 Motorway
The M6 motorway is the longest motorway in the United Kingdom. It is located entirely within England, running for just over from the Midlands to the border with Scotland. Ainderby Steeple is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. Ainderby Steeple is situated on the A684 approximately south-west of the county town of Northallerton, and to the immediate east of Morton-on-Swale. History The toponymy of the village is derived from the Old Norse personal name of ''Eindrithi'' and the word ''bi'' for farm with the addition of the Anglian word ''stēpel'' for steeple, giving ''Eindrithi's farm with a steeple''. The village is mentioned twice in the Domesday Book of 1086 as ''Eindrebi''. History The village takes its name from ‘Burton’, meaning a fortified settlement in Old English, and ‘Constable’ as in 1100 it was granted to Roald, the Chief Constable for the Earl of Richmond. Wensley, North Yorkshire
Wensley is a small village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It consists of a few homes and holiday cottage, an inn, a pub and a historic church. It is on the A684 road south-west of the market town of Leyburn. The River Ure passes through the village. The etymology of the name ultimately originates either from a compound of an Old English form of the god Woden (attested ''Wednesleg'' 1212, earlier ''Wodnesleie'', see Wednesday), and the Old English ''leah'' meaning wood or meadow. Another possible route for the first part is the personal name ''Wændel''. Wensley gives its name to the dale Wensleydale.
