A25 Motorway (Greece)
The A25 motorway is a controlled-access highway in northern Greece. It connects the Greek-Bulgarian border at Promachonas in the north with the A2 motorway (Greece), A2 motorway north of the city of Thessaloniki. Promachonas
Promachonas (, , ) is a village and a former community in the Serres (regional unit), Serres regional unit, Macedonia (Greece), Macedonia, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Sintiki, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 42.212 km2. Population 184 (2021). A major border crossing with Bulgaria is located here. The Bulgarian town opposite Promachonas is Kulata. History The village was annexed in 1913 by Greek forces during the Second Balkan War. During the years of Ottoman Empire, Ottoman rule, the village was known by its Bulgarian name ''Dragotin''. After the events of the Greek genocide in Asia Minor, refugees settled in the village. In 1927 the village was renamed Promachonas. Around the village, there are also the villages of Kapnotopos and Rupel. In 1928 the village numbered 463 inhabitants. Provatas (Greek: Προβατάς) is a larger village in Kapetan Mitrousi, Serres regional unit, northern Greece. It has 829 inhabitants (2021 census). Greek National Road 12
National Road 12 (, abbreviated as EO12) is a single carriageway road in northern Greece. It connects Thessaloniki with Kavala, passing through Serres and Drama. It also serves traffic heading towards the north, to the Greek/Bulgarian border. The section between Thessaloniki and Serres forms part of the Ε79 route. Part of the GR-12 has been replaced by the new A25 motorway (Thessaloniki - Serres) and the A2 motorway (Egnatia Odos). Route The GR-12 runs north from downtown Thessaloniki as an urban arterial road called "odos Lagkada". This section is common with the GR-2. Near Efkarpia it joins with the A2 motorway and follows this to the northeast until Liti. It continues to the northeast, more or less parallel to the A25.
