A. S. Atwal
Avtar Singh Atwal was a Deputy Inspector General in Punjab Police. He was murdered by a follower of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale at the steps of Golden temple while coming out after prayers on 25 April 1983 His murder set in motion a chain of events that led to the commencement of the Operation Blue Star. He was a posthumous recipient of President's Police Medal for Gallantry. Personal life He was survived by his wife and son. His wife Amrita Atwal later joined the Punjab Civil Services and retired as an IAS officer. His son, Harbir Atwal, also joined the Punjab Police as an Inspector, currently serving as a SP. Death On 23 April 1983, while serving as the DIG of Police Jalandhar range, Atwal visited the Golden Temple to pray. While leaving the Darbar Sahib, he was shot and killed by a lone gunman. Punjab was a province of British Raj, British India. Chief Minister Of Punjab (India)
The Chief Minister of Punjab is the head of the government of Punjab. Jaimal Singh Padda
Jaimal Singh Padda was a poet, communist activist. He was shot dead on 17 March 1988 in Lakhan ka Padda village, Kapurthala district by Khalistan movement extremists. He was filmed reciting his poem Una Mitterandi Yaad Pyari, before his death, by Anand Patwardhan in his documentary Una Mitterandi Yaad Pyari. Earlier Life and Activism Death During Punjab insurgency, Jaimal Padda had been vocal against both the Sikh and the Hindu fundamentalists. He campaigned against both Sikh and Hindu fundamentalists. His slogan was “Naa Hindu Raaj, Naa Khalistan, Raaj Karega Mazdoor Kisaan” (Neither Hindu state, nor Khalistan, we want the working class to rule). Deepak Dhawan
Deepak Dhawan was the State Committee member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) representing Punjab and also Joint Secretary of Khet Mazdoor Union, a mass organisation of CPI(M), which campaigns for the rights of landless agricultural labourers. He was a member of All India Students Federation (AISF) in D.A.V College, Amritsar, and an elected President of Student Council (Progressive Student Front - a united front of SFI and AISF) at Guru Nanak Dev University. Darshan Singh Canadian
Darshan Singh Canadian (born Darshan A. Sangha in 1917, in Langeri, Punjab, India – 25 September 1986) was a Sikh trade union activist and communist organizer in Canada and India. Canada Darshan Singh Canadian immigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in 1937. Upon his arrival, his uncle attempted to get him a job at Dominion Sawmills resulting in the uncle being fired and Sangha being hired at five cents less pay an hour. He became active in the Labor-Progressive Party (as the Communist Party of Canada was known). He was one of the founders of the International Woodworkers of America and served as one of the union's organizers as well as its general secretary from 1942 to 1946. He led striking woodworkers on a march on the provincial capital of Victoria in 1946. He fought for the rights of B.C.'s East Indian woodworkers. ''Baldev Mann'' was a left-wing activist of the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) New Democracy. He was a state level leader of Kirti Kisan Union and the editor of ''Hirawal Dasta'' a revolutionary journal of the Naxalites.
