The Heckler & Koch HK416 is an assault rifle chambered for the 5.56×45mm NATO Cartridge (firearms), cartridge. It is designed and manufactured by the German company Heckler & Koch. Although the design is based on the AR-15 class of firearm (specifically the Colt M4 carbine family issued to the U.S. military), it uses a proprietary Gas-operated reloading, short-stroke gas piston system from Heckler & Koch's earlier Heckler & Koch G36, G36 family of rifles. The .416 Barrett (10.4×83mm), centerfire rifle cartridge is a proprietary bottlenecked centrefire rifle cartridge designed in 2005. It is an alternative to the large-caliber .50 BMG in long-range high-power rifles. It was designed in response to a request for a medium/heavy rifle cartridge combination that was issued from Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division in late 2004. Design The Barrett .416 cartridge was designed by Chris Barrett, son of Ronnie Barrett, with the help of Pete Forras. The bullet was designed using some NACA low-supersonic-drag equations to design the shape. The cartridge was designed as an improvement to the .50 BMG cartridge, a common machine gun and rifle cartridge. The Thyssen Henschel UR-416 is a German armoured personnel carrier, first introduced in 1969 and based on the body of the Mercedes-Benz Unimog light truck. Development In 1965 an armoured car version was designed based on a Unimog 4×4 truck chassis. The UR-416 was produced in 1969 only for export. The hull is welded steel up to 9mm thick, and the driving position is in front, where there is also that of the vehicle commander.Foss, ''Jane's Tank & Combat Vehicle recognition guide'' (2002), p. 260. The UR-416 was developed as a private venture by Rheinstahl Maschinenbau (which later became Thyssen Maschinenbau and is now Henschel Wehrtechnik GmbH).
