3rd Peoples' Democratic Party Extraordinary Congress
The 3rd Peoples' Democratic Party Extraordinary Congress was held on 20 May 2017 to elect a new female co-leader for the Turkish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP). The party's previous chairwoman, Figen Yüksekdağ, had been imprisoned in November 2016 for inciting violence and distributing terrorist propaganda and had her party membership revoked on 9 March 2017. On 6 May 2017, the HDP Central Executive Committee met to appoint a new acting leader. Serpil Kemalbay, a serving deputy leader responsible for relations with labour and trade unions, was appointed as acting leader with the support of the HDP Women's Council. She was officially elected unopposed during the congress, and serves as co-leader of the party alongside its male leader, Selahattin Demirtaş. Serpil Kemalbay
Serpil Kemalbay Pekgözegü is a Turkish politician and former co-leader of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP). Early life and education Serpil Kemalbay, whose full name is Serpil Kemalbay Pekgözegü, was born in Ardahan and completed her primary and secondary education there. She first participated in left-wing politics during her first year at secondary school, where she took part in a boycott staged by 'revolutionary struggle' ("devrimci mücadele"). In 1978, she migrated with her family to İstanbul and graduated from Istanbul Technical University Department of Chemical Engineering. Peoples' Democratic Party (Turkey)
The Peoples' Democratic Party (Turkish: ''Halkların Demokratik Partisi'', acronymized as HDP; Kurdish: ''Partiya Demokratîk a Gelan''), or Democratic Party of the Peoples, is a pro-minority political party in Turkey. Generally left-wing, the party places a strong emphasis on participatory and radical democracy, feminism, LGBT rights, minority rights, youth rights and egalitarianism. It is an associate member of the Party of European Socialists (PES) a consultative member of the Socialist International and a party within the Progressive Alliance (PA). Figen Yüksekdağ
Figen Yüksekdağ Şenoğlu (born 19 December 1971) is a Turkish politician and journalist, who was a former co-leader of the left-wing Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) of Turkey from 2014 to 2017, serving alongside Selahattin Demirtaş. She was a Member of Parliament for Van since the June 2015 general election until her parliamentary membership was revoked by the courts on 21 February 2017. Her party membership and therefore her co-leadership position were revoked by the courts on 9 March 2017 following a six-year prison sentence for distributing "terrorist propaganda". Selahattin Demirtaş
Selahattin Demirtaş (born 10 April 1973) is a politician, author, and former member of the parliament of Turkey. He was the co-leader of the left-wing pro- Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), serving alongside Figen Yüksekdağ from 2014 to 2018. Demirtaş was the presidential candidate of the HDP in the 2014 presidential election, coming in third place. He led the HDP to gather 13.1% at the June 2015 parliament elections and 10.7% in the snap elections in November 2015, coming 4th in each election. He has been imprisoned since 4 November 2016 and despite his imprisonment the HDP fielded Demirtaş as its candidate for the 2018 presidential election, running his campaign from prison. Kurdish–Turkish Conflict (1978–present)
The Kurdish–Turkish conflict is an armed conflict between the Republic of Turkey and various Kurdish insurgent groups who have either demanded separation from Turkey to create an independent Kurdistan, or attempted to secure autonomy and greater political and cultural rights for Kurds inside the Republic of Turkey. The main rebel group is the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) ( Kurdish: ''Partiya Karkerên Kurdistanê''). Although the Kurdish-Turkish conflict has spread to many regions, most of the conflict has taken place in Northern Kurdistan, which corresponds with southeastern Turkey. The PKK's presence in Iraqi Kurdistan has resulted in the Turkish Armed Forces carrying out frequent ground incursions and air and artillery strikes in the region, and its influence in Syrian Kurdistan has led to similar activity there.
