31 January 1891 Revolt
The 31 January 1891 revolt was the first attempt by republicans to overthrow the Kingdom of Portugal, monarchy in Portugal. The revolt took place in the form of a military uprising in the country's second city of Porto. The causes The immediate cause of the revolt was the 1890 British Ultimatum, also known as Lord Salisbury's Ultimatum, which was delivered to Portugal on 11 January 1890. Portugal had attempted to claim a large area of land in southern Africa between its colonies of Portuguese Mozambique, Mozambique and Portuguese Angola, Angola, which had been included in Portugal's Pink Map prepared in 1885 to show the country's sovereignty over that land. The Ultimatum demanded the withdrawal of Portuguese forces from areas claimed by Portugal based on Portuguese exploration, as Britain claimed these on the basis of possession. Republicanism is a political ideology that encompasses a range of ideas from civic virtue, political participation, harms of corruption, positives of mixed constitution, rule of law, and others. Historically, it emphasizes the idea of self-governance and ranges from the rule of a representative minority or aristocracy to popular sovereignty. It has had different definitions and interpretations which vary significantly based on historical context and methodological approach. 5 October 1910 Revolution () was the overthrow of the centuries-old List of Portuguese monarchs, Portuguese monarchy and its replacement by the First Portuguese Republic. Municipal Library Elevator Coup
The Municipal Library Elevator Coup (), also known as The Elevator Coup (') or 28 January 1908 Coup ('), was the name given for the attempted ''coup d'état'' in Lisbon, capital of Portugal, by members of the Portuguese Republican Party and Progressive Dissidency against the administrative dictatorship of Prime Minister João Franco (and the political ascendancy of the Liberal Regenerator Party). The event was not confined to the Municipal Library Elevator, but was so named for the arrest of many conspirators at the structure on the afternoon of 28 January 1908. Although the coup was prevented by government forces, it failed to capture all the conspirators, which contributed to the assassination of the monarch Carlos I of Portugal and the heir to the throne, the Prince Royal, Luís Filipe. Church Of Saint Ildefonso
The ''Igreja de Santo Ildefonso'' is an eighteenth-century church in Porto, Portugal. The church is located near Batalha Square. Completed in 1739, the church was built in a proto-Baroque style and features a retable by the Italian artist Nicolau Nasoni and a façade of 1932 azulejo tilework. The church is named in honour of the Visigoth, Ildephonsus of Toledo, bishop of Toledo from 657 until his death in 667. History Prior to the building of the church of Saint Ildefonso, a chapel, known as Santo Alifon, stood on the site. Its construction date is unknown, but several early texts mention its existence. The earliest known reference to the site and the original chapel is in a work by a bishop of Porto, Vicente Mendes, dated 1296. The aged chapel, in danger of collapsing, was demolished in 1709 and construction began on the new church that year.
