2014 Icelandic Municipal Elections
Municipal elections took place in Iceland on 31 May 2014. 66% of eligible voters cast votes, the lowest proportion since Iceland gained independence. As part of a pledge, Mayor Jón Gnarr's Best Party did not participate in the election and was dissolved after the election was held. Results Overall Results in Reykjavík In total, 56,896 votes were cast. Of these, 2,024 were blank and 227 were invalid. On 11 June 2014, a coalition was announced of the Social Democrats, Bright Future, the Left-Greens, and the Pirate Party. Dagur B. Eggertsson, of the Social Democrats, became the new mayor, while the Left-Green councillor Sóley Tómasdóttir became president of the city council and Sigurður Björn Blöndal of Bright Future became the city council chairperson. Jón Gnarr (; born 2 January 1967)This is an Icelandic name. ''Kristinsson'' is the patronymic, but he is properly referred to as ''Jón Gnarr'' as he had it legally removed. is an Icelandic actor, comedian, and politician who served as the Mayor of Reykjavík from 2010 to 2014. Born Jón Gunnar Kristinsson, Jón legally changed his middle name in 2005 to the way his mother pronounced it when he was a boy. He prefers to be addressed as Jón Gnarr as he does not wish to carry his father's name. Under national law overseen by the Icelandic Naming Committee, he had not been allowed to legally drop "Kristinsson" from his name as seen on his passport until 2015. Gnarr was only recognized as a surname by the courts in 2018. Dawn, officially Dawn – The Organization of Justice, Fairness and Democracy ( is, Dögun – stjórnmálasamtök um réttlæti, sanngirni og lýðræði) is an Icelandic political organization founded 18 March 2012 to participate in the 2013 parliamentary elections. It was founded as a merger between three political parties: The Movement, Citizens' Movement, and the Liberal Party. Its founders included two current MPs, Margrét Tryggvadóttir and Þór Saari, and two former members of the now defunct Icelandic Constitutional Assembly (Gísli Tryggvason and Lýður Árnason). Lýður Árnason withdrew his membership of the party a year after it was founded. Reykjavík Mosque
The Reykjavík Mosque ( is, Moskan í Reykjavík) is a mosque and gathering area for Muslims in Iceland. It is located in the Ármúli district. The mosque was opened in 2002 by the Muslim Association of Iceland after requesting the city government for permission to build a purpose-built mosque in 2000, with no swift response. Services It offers Friday prayers every week and it is also open for all other prayers during the day from Fajr to Isha. In January 2009, a new wooden altar was built by members of the association. Sóley Tómasdóttir
Sóley Tómasdóttir (born 12 May 1974) is an Icelandic gender and diversity advocate and a former politician. She was the leader of the Left-Green Movement in the Reykjavík City Council from 2009 to 2016 and the President of the City Council from 2014 to 2016. Biography Sóley grew up mostly in Kópavogur but moved to Reykjavík in adolescence. She is a graduate of Menntaskólinn við Hamrahlíð, holds a BA degree in educational science and MSc degree in pedagogy, gender and diversity from Radboud University. Dagur Bergþóruson Eggertsson (born 19 June 1972) is an Icelandic politician who is the Mayor of Reykjavík. He was the vice-chairman of the Social Democratic Alliance from 2009 until 2013. He was first elected to the city council of Reykjavík in a 2002 election and became the mayor on 16 October 2007. An independent or non-partisan politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association. Best Party
The Best Party ( is, Besti flokkurinn) was an Icelandic political party founded by Jón Gnarr on 16 November 2009. The party ran in the 2010 city council election in Reykjavík and won a plurality on the Reykjavík City Council, receiving 34.7% of the vote, defeating the Independence Party which received 33.6%. It was a member of the International Pirate Party, but not associated with the Pirate Party Iceland. Jón Gnarr announced that the party was to be dissolved after he stepped down as mayor after the upcoming local elections in May 2014. Liberal Party (Iceland)
The Liberal Party ( is, Frjálslyndi flokkurinn) was a liberal political party in Iceland. Its main issue was fisheries policy and it drew its main support from coastal villages. The Liberal Party was founded by former Independence Party MP Sverrir Hermannsson in 1998. It was founded primarily in opposition to the fishing quota, and became a protest vote. In the following year's election, the party won two seats out of 63. This climbed to four in 2003: a level that was maintained at the 2007 election. However, the party lost all its parliamentary representation in 2009, after a financial crisis hit the country. The party was a strong supporter of the free market, against subsidies and monopolies, and in favour of civil liberties.
