''23 skidoo'' (sometimes ''23 skiddoo'') is an American slang phrase generally referring to leaving quickly, being forced to leave quickly by someone else, or taking advantage of a propitious opportunity to leave. Popularized during the early 20th century, the exact origin of the phrase is uncertain. ''23 skidoo'' has been described as "perhaps the first truly national fad expression and one of the most popular fad expressions to appear in the U.S", to the extent that "Pennants and arm-bands at shore resorts, parks, and county fairs bore either 3or the word 'Skiddoo'." "23 skidoo" combines two earlier expressions, "twenty-three" (1899) and "skidoo" (1901), both of which, independently and separately, referred to leaving, being kicked out, or the end of something. 23 Skidoo are a British band playing a fusion of industrial, post-punk, funk, and world music. History Formed in 1979 by Fritz Catlin, Johnny Turnbull and Sam Mills, and later augmented by Alex Turnbull and Tom Heslop, 23 Skidoo had interests in martial arts, Burundi and Kodo drumming, Fela Kuti, The Last Poets, William S. Burroughs, as well as the emerging confluence of industrial, post-punk and funk, heard in artists such as A Certain Ratio, Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, The Pop Group and This Heat. Their first 7", "Ethics", was released in 1980, followed by "The Gospel Comes To New Guinea" & "Last Words" 12" single which was co-produced by Stephen Mallinder, Richard H. Kirk and Chris Watson from Cabaret Voltaire at their studio, The Western Works in Sheffield. A Peel Session was recorded on 16 September 1981. ''23 Skidoo'' is a 1964 short experimental black-and-white film directed by Julian Biggs and produced by the National Film Board of Canada. Synopsis Its central images are "eerie" and "disturbing" scenes of downtown Montreal devoid of people. The film offers no explanation for what happened to the people until a scene in a newsroom where we glimpse a never-completed report about the explosion of the first neutron bomb. Accolades In 1965, the film was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Short Film. Also at the 1965 BAFTAs, it was nominated for the United Nations Award for "the best Film embodying one or more of the principles of the United Nations Charter in 1965" (''Dr. Strangelove'' won the award). Secret Agent 23 Skidoo or (SAS23) is a Grammy Award-winning hip-hop musician from Asheville, North Carolina. Secret Agent 23 Skidoo has been performing children's music since 2008. He performs hip-hop for children. After a decade of touring nationally as a rapper and producer in Granola Funk Express, he released his first kids' hip-hop album in 2008. Secret Agent 23 Skidoo serves as the official spokesman for the New York State Library System Children's Summer Reading Program and is the 2010 and PSA spokesman for the US Library System Collaborative Summer Library Program. He can be heard and seen on the radio and in TV commercials nationwide promoting summer reading programs at libraries. He has performed for kids in libraries and schools across the country.
