Early general elections will be held in the Netherlands on 29 October 2025 to elect members of the House of Representatives (Netherlands), House of Representatives, after the Schoof cabinet resigned on 3 June 2025. Background The 2023 Dutch general election resulted in losses for all parties in the fourth Rutte cabinet. 2023 Dutch General Election
Early general elections were held in the Netherlands on 22 November 2023 to elect the members of the House of Representatives (Netherlands), House of Representatives. The elections had been expected to be held in 2025, but a snap election was called after the fourth Rutte cabinet collapsed on 7 July 2023 due to disagreements on immigration policy between the coalition parties. The incumbent Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced that he would not lead his party into the election and that he would retire from politics. Bernard Johannes "Joost" Eerdmans (born 9 January 1971) is a Dutch politician, broadcaster, journalist and former civil servant who has served as Leader of JA21 since 18 December 2020, a party he co-founded with Annabel Nanninga. Hendrikus Wilhelmus Maria "Dick" Schoof (born 8 March 1957) is a Dutch politician and civil servant serving as the prime minister of the Netherlands of the Schoof cabinet since 2 July 2024. Schoof previously worked as secretary-general of the Ministry of Justice and Security from 2020 to 2024, as director-general of the General Intelligence and Security Service from 2018 to 2020, and as National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism from 2013 to 2018. He was director-general at the Ministry of Justice and Security from 2010 to 2013, and director-general for public order and safety at the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations from 2003 to 2010. Following the 2023 Dutch general election, Dutch general election of 22 November 2023, a process of Dutch cabinet formation, cabinet formation was started, resulting in the formation of the Schoof cabinet on 2 July 2024, comprising the Party for Freedom (PVV), the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), New Social Contract (NSC) and the Farmer–Citizen Movement (BBB). Despite intentions to form an extra-parliamentary cabinet, the cabinet is generally considered a parliamentary cabinet. The Party for Freedom ( , PVV) is a right-wing populist, far-right political party in the Netherlands. Geert Wilders is the founder, party leader, and sole registered member of the party. Founded in 2006 as the successor to Wilders' one-man group in the House of Representatives, it won nine seats in the 2006 general election. Fourth Rutte Cabinet
The fourth Rutte cabinet was the cabinet of the Netherlands from 10 January 2022 until 2 July 2024. The cabinet was a continuation of the third Rutte cabinet and was formed by the conservative liberal People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), the social liberal Democrats 66 (D66) and the Christian democratic Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) and Christian Union (CU) after the election of 2021. New Social Contract ( ; NSC) is a centre to centre-right political party in the Netherlands founded by Pieter Omtzigt. History In early 2021, Omtzigt wrote the manifesto '' A New Social Contract'', with ideas for the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), the party for which he served in the House of Representatives at the time.
