2024 Queensland Mayoral Elections
The 2024 Queensland mayoral elections was held on 16 March 2024 to elect the mayors of the 77 local government areas in Queensland, Australia. The elections were held as part of the statewide local elections. 14 mayors were elected unopposed. Background Karen Williams, the mayor of Redland, joined the Liberal National Party in 2021. Scenic Rim mayor Greg Christensen resigned from the LNP on 26 April 2023. Bob Manning, the mayor of Cairns, announced his retirement as mayor on 17 November 2023. Councillor Terry James was elected as mayor by a vote of fellow councillors on 22 November 2023 to serve the remainder of Manning's term. Mayor
In many countries, a mayor is the highest-ranking official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town. Worldwide, there is a wide variance in local laws and customs regarding the powers and responsibilities of a mayor as well as the means by which a mayor is elected or otherwise mandated. Shire Of Aurukun
The Shire of Aurukun is a local government area in Far North Queensland, Australia. The shire covers part of western Cape York Peninsula, the most northerly section of the Australian mainland. It covers an area of , and has existed as a local government area since 1978. History According to the earliest records, Cape Keerweer, located on the Gulf of Carpentaria coast, was the first site where Europeans wished to settle in Australia. A Dutch ship with Captain Willem Janszoon was the first recorded Dutch landing at Cape Keerweer. Captain Janszoon wanted to build a city at the site but the exploitative action of his crew led to a fight between the local Aboriginal people and the sailors. Bundaberg Region
The Bundaberg Region is a local government area in the Wide Bay–Burnett region of Queensland, Australia, about north of Brisbane, the state capital. It is centred on the city of Bundaberg, and also contains a significant rural area surrounding the city. It was created in 2008 from a merger of the City of Bundaberg with the Shires of Burnett, Isis and Kolan. The Shire of Bulloo ( ) is a local government area in South West Queensland, Australia. Jonathan Sriranganathan ( ; Sri) is an Australian activist and politician. He was the first ever Queensland Greens councillor, representing The Gabba Ward on the Brisbane City Council from 2016 to 2023. Early life and education Sriranganathan has a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and Bachelor of Arts with majors in Journalism and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies from The University of Queensland. Tracey Price
Tracey Price (born 1974) is a lawyer, businesswoman, mediator and Labor's Lord Mayoral Candidate for the 2024 Brisbane City Council Election. Price is a member of the Labor Left. She was identified as a potential contender in June, and endorsed as the party's mayoral candidate on 4 August 2023, after winning a preselection ballot. Adrian Schrinner
Adrian Schrinner is the incumbent Lord Mayor of Brisbane. He was sworn in on 8 April 2019 after outgoing Lord Mayor Graham Quirk announced his resignation, Schrinner was endorsed by the LNP Party Room on 31 March 2019 as Quirk's successor.
