2024 North Maluku Gubernatorial Election
The 2024 North Maluku gubernatorial election was held on 27 November 2024 as part of 2024 Indonesian local elections, nationwide local elections to elect the governor and vice governor of North Maluku for a five-year term. The previous election was held in 2018. Gubernatorial candidate Benny Laos, a former regent of Morotai Island Regency, Morotai Island, died in a speedboat explosion before the election. Laos' coalition nominated his widow, Sherly Tjoanda, in his place, who went on to win the election with 51% of the vote. Husain Syah of Tidore, Husain Alting Sjah of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), the titular Sultan of Sultanate of Tidore, Tidore and a former Senator, placed second with 24%. Sherly Tjoanda
Sherly Tjoanda Laos (born 8 August 1982) is an Indonesian politician and businesswoman who has served as the Governors of Indonesia, Governor of North Maluku since 20 February 2025. She is the first female governor of the province, having been elected in 2024 following the death of her husband, Benny Laos, who was a gubernatorial candidate. Early life and education Sherly Tjoanda was born on 8 August 1982, in Ambon, Maluku, Indonesia, to Paulus Tjoanda and Maria Margaretha Liem. She is of Chinese descent. She pursued her undergraduate studies at Petra University in Surabaya, majoring in International Business Management, and later earned a master's degree from Inholland University in the Netherlands. Gerindra Party
The Great Indonesia Movement Party (), better known as the Gerindra Party, is a nationalist, right-wing populist political party in Indonesia. Since 2014, it has been the third-largest party in the House of Representatives (DPR), having won 86 seats in the latest election. It currently controls the presidency. The Regional Representative Council (, DPD; alternatively translatable as the House of Regions or the House of Regional Representatives or the Senate of Indonesia), is one of two parliamentary chambers in Indonesia. The Sula Islands Regency () is one of the regencies in North Maluku province of Indonesia. It was originally formed on 25 February 2003, when it encompassed the three large islands comprising the Sula Archipelago, together with minor adjacent islands. Taliabu Island Regency () is a regency in the North Maluku province of Indonesia, consisting primarily of the island of Taliabu, the most western, geographically, of the Sula archipelago.
