2024 Moldovan European Union Membership Constitutional Referendum
A nationwide constitutional referendum was held in Moldova on 20 October 2024 on whether the country should amend the Constitution of Moldova (1994), Constitution of Moldova to include the Moldovan citizens' wish for European Union membership, in order to make it harder for future governments to shift the country away from its pro-European trajectory. The referendum occurred on the same day as the first round of the 2024 Moldovan presidential election. The proposal was approved and the constitution amended. Incumbent President of Moldova, president Maia Sandu campaigned for the "yes" side in the referendum. A narrow majority of votes were in favour of Moldova's EU aspirations, though the referendum was described as closer than expected. The voter turnout of 50% exceeded the 33.33% requirement for the referendum to be considered binding. Party Of Action And Solidarity
The Party of Action and Solidarity (, PAS) is a liberal political party in Moldova. The PAS was founded by Maia Sandu, the former Minister of Education and the incumbent president of Moldova. A pro-European party, it is an observer of the European People's Party (EPP) and the International Democracy Union (IDU). The ȘOR Party ( ) was a pro-Russian populist political party in Moldova. Known from its foundation in 1998 until October 2016 as the Socio-Political Movement "Equality" (), the party held Eurosceptic and Russophilic stances. On 19 June 2023, the Șor Party was declared unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court of Moldova and has been banned ever since. The unification of Moldova and Romania is the idea that Moldova and Romania should become a single sovereign state and the political movement which seeks to bring it about.
