2024 Leeds City Council Election
The 2024 Leeds City Council election was held on Thursday 2 May 2024. It was held on the same day as the second West Yorkshire mayoral election and other local elections across the United Kingdom. The Labour Party maintained control of the council, with their seat count holding steady. For the third year in a row, the Conservative Party lost three seats, all to Labour; the party would additionally lose a seat in Pudsey two days after the election when Trish Smith, re-elected the previous year, resigned to sit as an independent. The Green Party also succeeded in taking three seats from Labour and saw the largest popular vote share increase out of any of the parties, though Labour in turn unseated Green group leader David Blackburn, preventing the Greens from equalling the Liberal Democrats as the third-largest group on the council. Leeds City Council Elections
One third of Leeds City Council in the City of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England is elected each year, followed by no election in one year out of every four years. A total of 99 councillors have been elected from 33 electoral wards across Leeds since 1980. Political control From 1889 until 1974 Leeds was a county borough, independent from any county council. Under the Local Government Act 1972 it had its territory enlarged and became a metropolitan borough, with West Yorkshire County Council providing county-level services. The first election to the reconstituted city council was held in 1973, initially operating as a shadow authority before coming into its revised powers on 1 April 1974. 2018 Leeds City Council Election
The 2018 Leeds City Council election took place on Thursday 3 May 2018 to elect members of Leeds City Council in England. It was held on the same day as other UK local elections across England. Following a full boundary review of Leeds' 33 electoral wards by the Local Government Boundary Commission, the all-out election saw all of the council's 99 available council seats contested based on the new ward boundaries. Three of the previous wards were abolished and replaced (City & Hunslet, Headingley, and Hyde Park & Woodhouse for Headingley & Hyde Park, Hunslet & Riverside and Little London & Woodhouse). The last all-out election in Leeds was in 2004 after the previous full ward boundary review in 2003. Alaric Hall
Alaric Hall (born 1979) is a British philologist who is an associate professor of English and former director of the Institute for Medieval Studies at the University of Leeds. He has, since 2009, been the editor of the academic journal '' Leeds Studies in English'' and its successor '' Leeds Medieval Studies''. Biography Hall received his B.A. in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic from the University of Cambridge, his M.Phil. in Medieval Studies from the University of Glasgow, and his Ph.D. in English from the University of Glasgow. His Ph.D. thesis was on elves in Anglo-Saxon England. He then became an associate professor of English and director of the Institute for Medieval Studies at the University of Leeds.
