2024 Chittagong Unrest
In November 2024, an incident in Hazari Lane, Chittagong, Bangladesh, was triggered by a Facebook post referring the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) as a " terrorist organisation". The post reportedly caused discontent among ISKCON members. Subsequently, a mob, including members associated with ISKCON, attacked a local Muslim businessman who shared the post and attempted to burn down his shop in the vicinity. Joint forces of Bangladesh Police and Bangladesh Army intervened to disperse the crowd and conducted searches of local properties in the area. According to statement from the joint forces, they were reportedly attacked by individuals in the crowd, who threw acid and other objects at them during the incident, resulting in the injuries to several personnel. The Bangladesh Awami Jubo League () commonly known as the Jubo League, is the first youth organization of Bangladesh founded by Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani. Chhatra League
Bangladesh Chhatra League, simply Chhatra League (), is the student wing of the political party, Bangladesh Awami League, founded by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 4 January 1948. The organisation is banned and listed as a terrorist organisation in Bangladesh. BCL has been repeatedly accused of committing mass violence including torture, extortion, forced prostitution, killings to instill fear. At least 33 people were killed and 1,500 were seriously injured from attacks by BSL between 2009 and 2014. ''Amar Desh'' (; ) is a Bengali-language daily newspaper in Bangladesh, published from Dhaka since 2004. ''Amar Desh'' provides news about Bangladesh from local and regional perspectives and covers international news. ''Amar Desh'' is considered as a popular newspaper in Bangladesh. The newspaper was closed down in 2010 and again in 2013 by the Awami League administration. After the fall of Hasina's regime, the newspaper was relaunched on 22 December 2024. Mahmudur Rahman
Mahmudur Rahman (; born 6 July 1953), is the owner and editor of the Bengali daily Amar Desh in Bangladesh also an author, engineer and businessman. A strong critic of the Awami League government since 2008, he has faced over 50 defamation and sedition charges. He is the only person sentenced for contempt by the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, with human rights groups labeling the government's actions against him as judicial harassment. Volker Türk (born 27 August 1965) is an Austrian lawyer and United Nations official. He has been the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights since October 2022. Career Early years In 1991, Türk became a UN Junior Professional Officer and had a temporary assignment in Kuwait funded by the Austrian Foreign Ministry. Student–People's Uprising
The July Revolution, also known as the Student–People's uprising, was a pro-democracy mass uprising in Bangladesh in 2024. It began as a quota reform movement in early June 2024, led by the Students Against Discrimination, after the Bangladesh Supreme Court invalidated the government's 2018 circular regarding job quotas in the public sector. The movement escalated into a full-fledged mass uprising after the government carried out mass killings of protesters, known as the July massacre, by late July. By early August, the movement evolved into a non-cooperation movement, ultimately leading to the ouster of the then-prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India. Hasina's ouster triggered a constitutional crisis, leading to the formation of an interim government led by the country's only Nobel laureate, Muhammad Yunus, as the chief adviser.
