2023–24 Utah Utes Men's Basketball Team
The 2023–24 Utah Runnin' Utes men's basketball team represented the University of Utah during the 2023–24 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team was led by third-year head coach Craig Smith. They played their home games at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Utah started the season with strong non-conference play, winning landmark games on the road against Saint Mary's and at home against then #14th-ranked BYU. Prior to their final out-of-conference game against Bellarmine, Utah received the 29th-most votes in that week's AP poll and were projected to be a 9th-seed in that year's NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. Despite being dominant at home, even giving UCLA their second-worst loss in program history, the Runnin' Utes failed to win all but one conference road game, scoring a last-second basket to beat the same team in Pauley Pavilion. Craig Smith (basketball, Born 1972)
Craig Francis Smith (born December 14, 1972) is an American college basketball coach who is the head coach for the Utah Utes men's team of the Pac-12 Conference. A member of Tim Miles' coaching tree, Smith served as an assistant for Miles at four schools – Mayville State, North Dakota State, Colorado State, and Nebraska. Smith was also the head coach at Mayville State from 2004 to 2007, at South Dakota from 2014 to 2018, and at Utah State from 2018 to 2021. Early life and education Born in Stephen, Minnesota, Smith graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1996 with a bachelor's degree in secondary education and Northern State University in South Dakota with a master's degree in education in 1999. Branden Carlson
Branden Carlson (born June 14, 1999) is an American professional basketball player for Raptors 905 of the NBA G League. He played college basketball for the Utah Utes of the Pac-12 Conference. Early life and high school career Carlson grew up in South Jordan, Utah and attended Bingham High School. He committed to play college basketball at Utah over offers from UCLA, Stanford, BYU, UNLV, Utah State, UC Davis, Santa Clara, and Weber State. College career After graduating from high school, Carlson served a two-year Latter-Day Saint mission in Manchester, England. He enrolled at Utah before the start of the 2019–2020 season.
