South Korean Television
In South Korea, there are a number of national television networks, the three largest of which are Korean Broadcasting System, KBS, Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation, MBC, and Seoul Broadcasting System, SBS. Most of the major television studios are located on Yeouido and Sangam-dong, Seoul. South Korea became the fourth adopter in Asia when television broadcasting began on 12 May 1956 with the opening of HLKZ-TV, a commercially operated television station. HLKZ-TV was established by the RCA Distribution Company (KORCAD) in Seoul with 186–192 MHz, 100-watt output, and 525 scanning lines. Important genres of television shows include serial dramas, historical dramas, Korean variety show, variety shows, game shows, news programs, and documentaries. MBC TV (Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation Television) is a South Korean free-to-air television channel launched on 8 August 1969 and owned by Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation. History The Seoul Private Broadcasting Corporation was established on 21 February 1961. On 22 June 1966, the company received a broadcasting license from the government and started broadcasting on terrestrial television on 8 August 1969, with a 20-minute opening ceremony at 6pm. Its first drama, ''Lovers of the Sun'', came on air the following day. At the time of its launch, South Korea had 200,000 registered television sets. Unlike the Tongyang Broadcasting Company, MBC opened during the military regime of Park Chung-hee and had more restrictions, aligning its interests and programming with the ruling government. ''Drama Stage'' () is a South Korean weekly television program that features ten one-act dramas, which is similar to KBS2's ''Drama Special''. The short plays were created by writers selected from the ''O'PEN Drama Storyteller Exhibition''. O'PEN writers were recruited through an open call between January and March 2017. A total of 3,700 aspiring writers applied for the competition with scripts for dramas or films during the contest period of about two months. Dozen of various drama and film industry officials judged the scripts in two to three rounds. The jury finally selected 35 new writers, including 20 new drama writers and 15 new movie writers.
