2023 Yamaguchi 2nd district by-election was held on 23 April 2023 because Nobuo Kishi resigned as a member of the House of Representatives. Background In January 2023, Nobuo Kishi, Special Adviser to the PM, announced his resignation as a member of the House of Representatives, citing his poor physical condition caused by his illness. On February 3, Kishi offered to resign to House of Representatives Speaker Hiroyuki Hosoda. On February 7, Hosoda allowed Kishi to resign, and a by-election would be held on April 23, 2023, under the Election Law. On the same day, Nobuchiyo Kishi, Kishi's eldest son and one of Kishi’s secretaries, announced his candidacy for the by-election. Nobuo Kishi
is a Japanese politician who serves as the Special Advisor to the Prime Minister for National Security Policy and Nuclear Disarmament Issues. A member of the Liberal Democratic Party, he previously served as Minister of Defense of Japan from September 2020 to August 2022. He is also a member of the House of Representatives, representing Yamaguchi’s 2nd District since 2012. He is the younger brother of former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe. Yukio Hatoyama

Naoto Kan
is a Japanese politician who was Prime Minister of Japan and President of the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) from June 2010 to September 2011. Yoshimasa Hayashi
is a Japanese politician who currently serves as Minister for Foreign Affairs since November 2021. A member of the Liberal Democratic Party, he also serves in the House of Representatives for the Yamaguchi 3rd district since 2021.
