2023 World Matchplay
The 2023 World Matchplay (known as the 2023 Betfred World Matchplay), was the 30th annual staging of the World Matchplay, organised by the Professional Darts Corporation. The tournament took place at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool, from 15 to 23 July 2023. Michael van Gerwen was the defending champion, after winning his third World Matchplay title in 2022, defeating Gerwyn Price 18–14, but was eliminated in the first round, losing 7–10 to Brendan Dolan. Nathan Aspinall won his first World Matchplay title and second Premier title overall, defeating Jonny Clayton 18–6 in the final. The 2023 Women's World Matchplay also took place during the event, as Beau Greaves won her first televised championship by defeating Mikuru Suzuki 6–1 in the final. Winter Gardens, Blackpool
The Winter Gardens is a large entertainment complex in Blackpool, Lancashire, England, which includes a theatre, ballroom and conference facilities. Opened in 1878, it is a Grade II* listed building, operated by Blackpool Entertainment Company Limited on behalf of Blackpool Council, which purchased the property from Leisure Parcs Ltd as part of a £40 million deal in 2010. The Winter Gardens has hosted the annual conferences of British political parties and trade unions and its owners claim that every Prime Minister since World War II has addressed an audience at the venue. Michael Van Gerwen
Michael van Gerwen (; born 25 April 1989) is a Dutch professional darts player. He is currently PDC Order of Merit, ranked number 3 in the world, having been number 1 from 2014 to 2021. He is also a three-time PDC World Darts Championship, PDC World Champion, having won the title in 2014 PDC World Darts Championship, 2014, 2017 PDC World Darts Championship, 2017 and 2019 PDC World Darts Championship, 2019. High Dart Average
The three-dart average in darts is the average score achieved with three darts thrown. Averages are the most cited statistics in matches as they give a rough estimate of a player's form. The longer a match lasts, the harder it is to maintain a high average as low scoring legs or missed darts at a double bring the average down. While there have been match averages of over 130 in floor tournaments, the world record only lists televised matches, which are easy to verify. 2023 PDC Pro Tour
The 2023 PDC Pro Tour is the current series of non-televised darts tournaments organised by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). Players Championships and European Tour events are the events that make up the Pro Tour. There will be thirty Players Championship events and thirteen PDC European Tour events, as well as 24 events for the Challenge and Development Tours, and the Women's Series. Prize money On 21 November 2022, it was announced that the prize money for the Women's Series will be doubled in 2023. The following day, it was announced that the prize money for Challenge/Development Tour events would also increase, with the prize fund going up from £10,000 to £15,000 per event. PDC Order Of Merit
The PDC Order of Merit is a world ranking system used by one of the darts organisations, the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). Following the 2007 PDC World Darts Championship it superseded a world ranking system based on points being awarded for performances in ranking tournaments. How it works The Order of Merit is similar to that employed in golf's European Tour. Prize money won during the previous two seasons is calculated and the rankings are determined from this money list. Mikuru Suzuki
is a Japanese darts player. She was a two-time back-to-back British Darts Organisation (BDO) women's world champion. She plays in events of the World Darts Federation (WDF). Career Suzuki is an experienced soft-tip darts player, having competed in many tournaments and professional tours in her home country of Japan, as well as across east Asia. She began playing darts in her late twenties, winning many mainly soft-tip tournaments in Asia before becoming BDO World Champion aged 36 in 2019. Beau Greaves (born 9 January 2004) is an English darts player who currently plays in the World Darts Federation (WDF) and Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events. She is the current World Darts Federation women's world champion, having won the 2022 WDF World Darts Championship. She is also a WDF Europe Cup Champion. 2023 Women's World Matchplay
The 2023 Betfred Women's World Matchplay was the second staging of the tournament by the Professional Darts Corporation. The tournament featured the top eight players on the 2023 PDC Women's Series Order of Merit, competing in a knockout format, with the winner earning a place in the 2023 Grand Slam of Darts and the 2024 PDC World Darts Championship. The tournament was held at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool on 23 July 2023. In this tournament Noa-Lynn became the first trans woman to compete in a PDC televised event. Brendan Dolan
Brendan Gabriel Dolan (born 2 August 1973) is a Northern Irish professional darts player from County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, who plays in Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events. He is best known for becoming the first player to hit a nine-dart finish in a "double-to-start" event (Where a player must hit a double, with a maximum value of 40, to begin play, as opposed to the traditional free choice, 60 point maximum first dart), which he did at the 2011 World Grand Prix. He lost to Phil Taylor in the final of the tournament; to date, it was his only appearance in a major final. Gerwyn Stephen Price (born 7 March 1985) is a Welsh professional darts player and former professional rugby union and rugby league player. Nicknamed "The Iceman", he competes in events of the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), where he is currently the World No. 4. He is a 3-time Grand Slam Champion and a former world champion, becoming the first ever Welshman to win the tournament. He is also a former world No. 1. The World Matchplay, also known as the Betfred World Matchplay for sponsorship purposes, is a professional darts tournament and one of three legs of the Triple Crown. It is played in a legs format, and is run by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). Michael van Gerwen is the current champion after winning the 2022 edition. History The World Matchplay has been played annually since 1994 in the Empress Ballroom at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool.
