2023 Ulaanbaatar Floods
Heavy rainfall in July 2023 resulted in severe flooding across Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Background Continuous heavy rainfall in the Mongolia's capital city resulted in the overflowing of Tuul River and Selbe River which cross the city. The flood damaged a dam along the Selve River, causing it to flood along its river bank. On 25 July 2023, flood warning was issued by the city government. Impact More than 20,000 residents of Ulaanbaatar were displaced and subsequently evaculated to safe places. The flood flooded basement of apartments and traped cars. Electricity was also cut in some buildings in the capital. Several people were killed during the disaster. Response The Government of Mongolia declared a state of high alert for Ulaanbaatar, citing the rain was the heaviest in the past 50 years. Tuul River
The Tuul River or Tula River (; , , ; in older sources also Tola) is a river in central and northern Mongolia. Sacred to the Mongols, the Tuul is generally called the Hatan Tuul (, ; "Queen Tuul"). It is long and drains an area of . The ''Secret History of the Mongols'' (1240 AD) frequently mentions a "Black Forest of the Tuul River" where the palace of Ong Khan was located. The river originates in the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area in the Khentii Mountains, in the Erdene sum of Töv aimag. From there, it travels southwest until it reaches the territory of Ulaanbaatar. Selbe River
The Selbe River () is a river in central Mongolia. It flows at an altitude between 1850 and 1350 meters above sea level through the southern part of the Khentii Mountains. This river is 26.2 km long and the river basin covers 220 square kilometers. The river flows through the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar, and merges into the Tuul River. The inter Ulaanbaatar city Selbe basin was renovated in 2012. Before this reconstruction the river was mostly dry during colder seasons. In the same year, the river parts in Ulaanbaatar area was declared protected status to protect against city pollutions. In 2025, retaining wall is being constructed along the bank of the river section that passes through Ulaanbaatar for flood mitigation.
