2023 Toronto Mayoral By-election
The 2023 Toronto mayoral by-election was held on Monday, June 26, 2023, to elect the 66th mayor of Toronto to serve the remainder of the Toronto City Council 2022–2026, 2022–2026 city council term following the resignation of Mayor John Tory. The election was won by Olivia Chow, a former Toronto City Council, city councillor and Member of Parliament (Canada), member of Parliament (MP). She defeated former deputy mayor Ana Bailão, former Chief of the Toronto Police Service, police chief Mark Saunders (police officer), Mark Saunders, and 99 other candidates. Chow assumed office on July 12, 2023. On February 10, 2023, Tory announced his intention to resign following the admission of an affair with a staffer; he left office on February 17, 2023. Olivia Chow
Olivia Chow (; born March 24, 1957) is a Canadian retired politician who was a federal New Democratic Party (NDP) member of Parliament (MP) representing Trinity—Spadina from 2006 to 2014. Chow ran in the 2014 Toronto mayoral election, placing third behind winner John Tory and runner-up Doug Ford, and served on the Metro Toronto Council from 1991 to the 1998 amalgamation and subsequently on Toronto City Council until 2005, when she ran for MP. Chow is the widow of former Official Opposition and NDP leader Jack Layton. They were married from 1988 until his death from cancer in 2011. Chow was elected to represent Trinity—Spadina in the House of Commons on January 23, 2006, as a member of the NDP. In 2011, she was re-elected in her riding for her third straight win. Climate change mitigation is action to limit climate change by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases or removing those gases from the atmosphere. In a first-past-the-post electoral system (FPTP or FPP), formally called single-member plurality voting (SMP) when used in single-member districts or informally choose-one voting in contrast to ranked voting, or score voting, voters cast their vote for a candidate of their choice, and the candidate who receives the most votes wins even if the top candidate gets less than 50%, which can happen when there are more than two popular candidates. As a winner-take-all method, FPTP often produces disproportional results (when electing members of an assembly, such as a parliament) in the sense that political parties do not get representation according to their share of the popular vote. CP24 is a Canadian English-language specialty news channel owned by Bell Media, a subsidiary of BCE Inc. and operated alongside the Bell-owned CTV Television Network's owned-and-operated television stations CFTO-DT (CTV Toronto) and CKVR-DT (CTV 2 Barrie). The channel broadcasts from 299 Queen Street West in Downtown Toronto. It was first originally launched on March 30, 1998, under the name CablePulse24 by its owners CHUM Limited and Sun Media.
