2023 Solomon Islands Protests
In February 2023, protests broke out in the Solomon Islands. Background The country previously was hit by mass unrest and deadly riots in November 2021. The Guadalcanal Landowner Defendant Force (GLODF) threatened to protest during the 2023 Pacific Games. The Solomon Islands has recently been deepening ties with China over their historic primary ally the United States. This was a concern of Australia and the Biden Administration. Events On 2 February 2023, the United States reopened its embassy in the country after a 30-year absence. On 7 February 2023, Premier of Malaita Province Daniel Suidani was removed from office after a vote of no confidence from the provincial legislature. Suidani had pushed for independence from the central government. As premier he did not recognise the One China Policy of the government. China–Solomon Islands Relations
Solomon Islands and the People's Republic of China established official diplomatic relations in 2019. Prior to this, Solomon Islands had diplomatic relations with the Republic of China, otherwise known as Taiwan. Since December 2023, the ambassador of China to Solomon Islands is Cai Weiming. As of 28 December 2023, the ambassador of Solomon Islands to China is Barrett Salato. 2024 Solomon Islands General Election
General elections were held in Solomon Islands on 17 April 2024 to determine the composition of the 12th Parliament. Initially planned for 2023, parliament voted in 2022 to delay the elections. Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare claimed the country could not afford to have an election in the same year the Solomon Islands were hosting the Pacific Games. The opposition condemned the delay and accused Sogavare of a power grab. A major campaign issue included the country's ties with China; however, domestic issues were a primary concern amongst many voters, including the cost of living, the national debt and medicine shortages. Auki
Auki is the provincial capital of Malaita Province, Solomon Islands. It is situated on the northern end of Langa Langa Lagoon on the north-west coast of Malaita. It is one of the largest provincial towns in Solomon Islands. It was established as the administrative center for Malaita Province in 1909. Overview There are daily flights between the Solomon's capital of Honiara (on Guadalcanal Island) and Auki. There are also regular shipping services between Honiara and Auki. The area is rich in culture and has become a central hub for many Malaitans who use the area to conduct a majority of trade and business in the province. One China Policy

2021 Solomon Islands Unrest
The 2021 Solomon Islands unrest was a series of demonstrations and violent riots in Solomon Islands from 24 to 27 November 2021. It started off as a peaceful protest against the government's decision to recognize the People's Republic of China over Taiwan. However, it turned violent as protesters attempted to storm the parliament to depose Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare. Many businesses, especially Chinese businesses located in Honiara's Chinatown, were targeted by protestors, and were burned and looted. A police station was set on fire. The government responded by deploying the police in which they used tear gas on the protesters. They also requested the Australian Government for support. As a result, Australia deployed the Australian Federal Police and Defence Force. Papua New Guinea and Fiji dispatched peacekeepers while New Zealand deployed police and troops. Daniel Suidani
Daniel Suidani is a Solomon Islands politician who served as the Premier of Malaita Province from June 2019 until his ouster in a no confidence vote in February 2023. Tenure During Suidani's tenure as Premier of Malaita Province, the Solomon Islands government officially switched diplomatic recognition from the Republic of China (Taiwan) to the People's Republic of China. Suidani was highly critical of this decision, alleging that the Chinese government offered bribes to him in exchange for political allegiance. Suidani has in turn been accused of accepting bribes from the Taiwanese government. In 2020, Suidani held an independence referendum for Malaita Province, which was dismissed as illegitimate by the central government. Malaita Province
Malaita Province is the most populous of the nine provinces of Solomon Islands. The population of the province is 122,620 (1999). The area of the province is . It is named after its largest island, Malaita (also known as "Big Malaita" or "Maramapaina").
