2023 Pasadena–Deer Park Tornado
On the afternoon of January 24, 2023, a large, intense, rain-wrapped tornado moved through the suburbs of Pasadena and Deer Park, in the Houston metropolitan area in Texas. The National Weather Service rated the most-severe damage from the tornado low-end EF3 on the Enhanced Fujita scale with winds estimated at . The tornado prompted the issuance of a tornado emergency, the first to be issued by the National Weather Service's forecast office in Houston. The tornado was the strongest cold-season tornado to strike the Houston area since 1992. The staff of KTRK-TV published in December 2023 that the tornado was "hands down the most impactful weather story" covered by the news station during the year. Golden Acres is an area in Pasadena, Texas, United States that was formerly an unincorporated community in Harris County. Golden Acres is located southeast of Downtown Pasadena. The name comes from the developer's slogan, "a golden opportunity." History A post office in Golden Acres opened in 1946. In 1949 the community had 400 residents and two businesses; at a later point Golden Acres had five businesses. Mail was delivered from Pasadena after the post office closed in 1959. Genoa is an area in Houston, Texas, United States located about southeast of Downtown Houston; it was formerly a distinct unincorporated area in Harris County. History J. H. Burnett established Genoa in 1892; he gave the community the name "Genoa" because he believed that the climate was similar to the climate of Genoa, Italy. The post office opened during that year.
