2023 Nigerian Senate Elections In Lagos State
The 2023 Nigerian Senate elections in Lagos State was held on 25 February 2023, to elect the 3 Senate of Nigeria, federal Senators from Lagos State, one from each of the state's three senatorial districts. The elections coincided with the 2023 Nigerian presidential election, 2023 presidential election, as well as 2023 Nigerian Senate election, other elections to the Senate and 2023 Nigerian House of Representatives election, elections to the House of Representatives; with 2023 Nigerian elections#State elections, state elections being held two weeks later. Primaries were held between 4 April and 9 June 2022. Background In terms of the previous Senate elections, two of the three incumbent senators were returned as Oluremi Tinubu (APC-Central) and Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (APC-West) were re-elected while Gbenga Bareehu Ashafa (APC-East) lost renomination. The Senate is the upper chamber of Nigeria's bicameral legislature, the National Assembly of Nigeria. The National Assembly (popularly referred to as NASS) is the nation's highest legislature, whose power is to make laws, is summarized in chapter one, section four of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution. It consists of 109 senators: the 36 states are each divided in 3 senatorial districts each electing one senator using the first-past-the-post electoral system; the Federal Capital Territory elects only one senator also using first-past-the-post. The President of the Senate is the presiding officer of the Senate, whose chief function is to guide and regulate the proceedings in the Senate.
